The Beta, by the standard definition, is a subordinate of the Alpha and tries to repeatedly overthrow the Alpha. So the Alpha is simply the Beta that finally won. So the Alpha and the Beta are only really separated but position, not any actually character traits.

This really gave me quite an "aha" moment!

I had a few coaches and teachers that were "the true definition of alpha''. I like the OP's view a lot. Very eye opening.

The "alpha male" figure is all performance

Barney Stinson character is an example of this. Usually men who were full of complexes in the past become alpha males.

It's like the correlation long car = short height. Alpha males need to exaggerate their behaviour, improve their muscles or acquire expensive gadgets to counteract and "destroy" what they consider is their "omega male past".

To me, a real man is someone that doesn't need to fit a stereotype to be proud of himself.

An Alpha Male being necessarily generous or kind is wishful thinking. Genghis Khan was like, alpha maximus

I see many being referred to as as*holes and aggressive dominant characters, when actually, the Alpha is often a lot nicer than you think. I think everyone knows or has known/met an Alpha.

He is the guy that most people like, boys and girls alike. He has influence over people because he is self-confident, and kind-hearted, generous and wise. An angry Beta male who tells people he is an Alpha male, or wants people to think he is, asserts himself by force, and dominance, rather than compassion, intelligence, and strength beyond means. Those are who people are really talking about when they say "Alpha male-assholes".

Alpha Males do not need to be aggressive, and in fact are often the most passive, simply because they are sure of themselves and their surroundings. They are a man in every true sense. And they do not revel in being smarter than anyone, rather they surround themselves with people who are just as clever, or indeed people who are just as clever.

Now the angry Betas, who pose as Alpha Males, are as*holes (sometimes). They are just as insecure as the many other men who aren't.

I think a lot of men who are like us (whether they have AS or not) have the potential to at least be a Gamma Male (I'll get into that one later ) and also elevate to being an Alpha Male. It can be done if we can fine tune our own being to our strengths while ironing out our weaknesses.

Just my opinion, but I don't think it is right when a lot of good men get lambasted for things they haven't even done or aren't at fault for.

I think you are right, but I'd question the word "Passive". I think "Confident" is better.

They like being king of the hill and enjoy the ribbing of those that they perceive to be different or beneath them.

But this kind of reaction is common among people with self-esteem and confidence issues, and is not limited to alphas or betas or even guys.

I think that alpha males are born with a natural predisposition to have or acquire a certain kind of power that can be used for people's benefit, or detriment. It's the alpha male's upbringing and experience (or lack thereof) that will determine which outcome will prevail. The "goodness" of the alpha male is far from guaranteed. :?

Wonderfully put. Not every alpha male will be a saint, no man is. But, there are probably more good Alphas than bad, I would say. I think many of us are in the Gamma stage.

Thanks 'Puppy! There's many an Alpha with a lot of leadership ability & charisma that still can't resist the chance to Boot a Beta when they get the chance. Are they still truly an Alpha? In the eyes of those who mindlessly follow them, I'm sure they are! :?

If that's how you see it, you've probably never seen an alpha. An alpha is rare and only for the same gender. They're the most capable people in my experienxe but they are followed subconsciously. They don't actually have to do anything. Not every group has an alpha although it may seem they do. Let's not make stereotypes that we're such bad people. I swear never to harn innocents. Not that anyone actually would want to. People only do that kind of thing to feel accepted, not alphas. It's because of these stupid alpha male stereotypes that makes males act like this. Following an alpha can't be helped. If you don't care much about the guy, he's not an alpha. Alphas are hard to recognize but they're the people that every single person of the same gender is interested in and if close enough to a stranger, the stranger will interact but only if from the same gender. Adult males tend to less so that sucks.

@ Erwin. I see what you are saying. We used to call these men, "A Man's Man", & they fit your description. I've known a few of them as ...not really close friends (since I'm female) but they are people whom I could see really did lead in all/most situations with other men.

There are probably some women who are initially attracted to the power that they have over other men, but in the end, there isn't much left over for the women in their lives. They don't seem communicate well, or relate well to women. They tend to see everything through a male viewpoint. They are great people for other men to hang with, but women can seldom break through & even if they did, there wouldn't be enough time/energy left for them. They seem to have a lot of short term relationships. One I know has had 5 marriages & 8 children & mass quantities of children out of wedlock that he can't support.
(He even got a sometime G.F. pregnant after he had a vasectomy. Now that a "man's man", I guess. :?: However, his current wife was not amused, since she wanted kids, & he had the vasectomy on the down low.)
From his viewpoint it made perfect sense. 'I have more kids than I can support now. I really don't need any more."
His wife had no kids & wanted them. He forgot to relate the matter of the vasectomy to her before they got married, & also the pregnant G.F. Yet somehow it all made perfect sense to him. 8O

Other guys love "Him" & would follow him into the mouth of Hell. Some women do too for about a year or two,... if that.

I cannot help but think that if an Alpha thing actually existed it would be the kind of thing nobody ever argues over because it's self evident, like, you know, sun rises every morning - would anyone like to dispute that?

People who assert themselves and others with "dominance, compassion and intelligence are people who feel "secure" with themselves. No alpha-male blah blah blah needed. It's kind of like "treat people how you want to be treated." Alpha males don't always influence or take a hold of the situation. Because some people don't care what goes on. Let that guy do the extra work, and try to "influence" me. Alpha males usually aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. :)

Also when you mentioned possibly "gamma" males, I thought you were going to talk about nuclear radiation next.
