Extras Work?

Has anyone done this? My neice is sending me a list of links that one of her friends who happens to be in the local movie industry recommended as legit extras casting agencies. She was thinking it might be flexible enough to allow me to work and be in school at the same time.

I know, I know -- crowds, noise, confusion -- all the things I hate and with which I have trouble dealing in day to day life.

Does anyone have any practical experience with this kind of work, though? I figure I will most likely not even get called, but if I do, I can at least try it out. I can always say no later.

I haven't done this. Austin is a major hot spot in the independent film industry, many films of which are featured during SXSW.
