When I was a child, no-one knew about AS. The stigma attached to anything that deviated from the normal was much greater than today. I had moderate As as a child and an adolescent, and I am mild today.
I was still able to get a college degree and a decent job. True, the degree was from a second-rate school, and the job is for a government agency, so it had security and good benefits rather than big money and prestige. The results were life as a total outcast. A lot of my family has basically disowned me.
I am still working on getting a better job. I have bailed out of a bad marriage. Probably this economic downturn is not deep enough. If enough men are out of work, then my secure income looks more attractive relatively, and the women will come more easily.
