I don't think I'm a genius.

I'm just trying to see how common it is for someone with AS/autism/NLD to be average instead of super smart.

Intelligence and doing well at school aren't mutually exclusive.

I want to see how many people did poorly in school. I even hear of classic autistic kids doing better than me.

Statistically, should be mostly average. 70% of human beings are in the average range, and since only the lowest 3% of scores are eliminated from Asperger's, that means about 72% of Aspies should be average.

On the other hand, most Aspies will have scattered skills. I haven't got an actual figure on this, but I'm betting "most" will be "at least nine of ten", with "scatter" being defined as having skills much farther above and below one's personal average than most people have. That means that most Aspies will have to deal with both strengths and weaknesses that those with their same measured IQs will not have.

Also: IQ is bunk. Just sayin'.

Oh, yeah: I'm an underachiever. Lazy to the core.

Intelligence and doing poorly in school aren't mutually exclusive, either.

I am very academically gifted, but my grades between sixth grade and my junior year of high school were not representative of that. I was too busy obsessing about my obsession to do my homework, and when I actually did do my homework I would often forget to bring it to school.

I could read college-level books while I was still in elementary school, but my grades in middle school and the first half of high school were very bad.

I did good grades in the second half of high school and in college.

Good at some, sucked at others. And then average...pretty much all of them.

IQ test are Bad and a joke.

I just had one and it was 157 but.. there was a big error. The one that did the test sent the test in to some place so it can be determined. Some how they got names mixed up. oops! WTF? After a redo I had a IQ of just 66 8O No way in this world I have a IQ of 66. So to me IQ test is a bad joke.

I have to first say that I do not know if I have AS or HFA. So my response may be meaningless.

As far as academic achievement in high school, I was for the most part an underachiever. I was so much so that I dropped out of the enrichment classes that took us to the univeristy every other week. I missed so many days of school throughout my high school career....I'm surprised my parents weren't fined or worse. I enjoyed art and biology, but even at a certain point I started not to care. I think I managed to graduate with a 83% overall...we did not have a GPA score. School was a terrible time for me.

And IQ tests are bunk.

I voted "depends on the subject". I was an overachiever in my Japanese and art classes, but I was average to below average in most of my other classes because I just didn't care. My high school GPA was only 3.0, but I was in the Japanese Honor Society.

My only overachieving subject was Indonesian. Oh how I loved it. I read and learned words way far ahead the others in the class. Still remember a few of them today. 'Bodoh' is good for when you want to call someone stupid without them knowing.
I really enjoyed english but my report card from year 7 said I was failing in that too.

I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about IQ tests, but it might help my job network if I had an actual score. Above 90 isn't good enough. I was supposed to do one today but my assessor called in sick.

I could not read very well and my comprehension was poor. If I was talented at anything it would have been drawing.

Do you mean grade point average?

I only got a good grade and made the top honor roll because I got extra help with my school work.

underachiever, was too busy trying to duck the bullies and avoid getting stuffed in cupboards by classmates and focusing on my obsessions to even stand a chance at school. Also I often got marked down on things like reaching my answer by a method the schools considered incorrect or answering on a more advanced level. (added memorised grays anatomy labelling and additional details on papers)

I don't know what grade point average is. I guess I mean if you were like a B or C student.
I'm my report card there were low scores, average and high. Mine were very low. It was like a graph.
Funny that I have a photographic memory of my year 2 report card and not the school work I did in that year.

GPA is an average of your grades, which each letter assigned a number (F = 0, D = 1, C = 2, B = 3, A = 4). So someone with all As would have a 4.0 GPA, someone with an equal number of Bs and Cs would have a 2.5, etc.

I have NLD and i've taken five IQ/neuropsych tests in my life. Here's my results in chronological order from the earliest to most recent.

1. VIQ-104
PIQ-82
FSIQ-94

2. VIQ-125
PIQ-94
FSIQ-112

3. VIQ-127
PIQ-102
FSIQ-116

4. VIQ-119
PIQ-100
FSIQ-112

5. VIQ-155
PIQ-111
FSIQ-143

With the exception of the first one, all of these results suggest my overall cognitive abilities are in the high average at least and "very superior" at most. I believe these tests have somehow wildly overestimated my cognitive abilities. There are NO other factors in my life which lead me to believe my intellectual functioning is anything beyond borderline. I'm 40 and i've never been able to live independently. I've never been able to hold anything but the most menial jobs. I was even terminated from most of those positions because there was ALWAYS one or more tasks I couldn't master. My ineptitude with cash registers and POS machines (in restaurants) is legendary. I mixed up food orders as a waiter and I epic fail at the simplest mechanical tasks. Regardless of how many times someone shows me how to do it, I can't even remember how to fold the flaps of a cardboard box so the damn thing stays closed!! !. It took me eight years to obtain an AA degree (liberal arts to boot) from a community college WITH course substitutions in mathematics. I could go on forever, but i'm sure everyone gets the picture. All this from a person who somehow managed to score 143 (! !! !) on at least one of the WAIS-III tests they received. Whatever the case may be, i'm obviously not among the ubermensch NLD-ers/Aspies with ten MA degrees.

Furthermore...I have no appreciable skills, talents, hobbies, etc...outside the vocational/academic milieu which might "redeem" my cognitive functioning. Sure there are some NLD/Aspie adults who can't work, hold no degrees and live at home with their parents. But most of them seem to have SOME skills and talents.

All these things considered....it is reasonable to believe my overall intellectual capacity is anything beyond borderline in spite of my IQ scores?

This is the inexpressibly hellish state of affairs i've lived with for 40 years. The intelligence I possess is just enough to allow me to be hyper-aware of how unintelligent I am. And just enough to be hyper-aware of all the beauty, joy, happiness, sense of accomplishment, life experience, etc....ad infinitum... my accursed brain has robbed me of.
