As the subject says, tomorrow at 3:00 PM, eastern time, I am going to take the test to obtain my drivers license. I am pretty nervous about the whole process. I am a good driver, but I am afraid my parallel parking isn't blindfold-perfect. :( How did other Aspies deal with obtaining their licenses? Was it very stressful? Were you relieved afterwards? Also, is common for high functioning autistics to have licenses?

Very best to you. If, for some reason, you don't pass it the first time; don't give up. Just try again! It took me a few times to get it. To my benefit I was never asked to parallel park. Many years later and driving basically stresses me still. However, we don't have public transportation so I drive when I must. You know that you're a good driver, you'll be fine. Really like your user name as I love reading Asimov.

It was very easy for me, I didn't even have an actual test. My driving instructor just said one day I was getting it. I never had to parallel park.

I did not learn to drive until this year. I was ten years later than my peers.

I had the same worries you did about parallel parking. Most instructors will see you know what you're doing, and won't expect a "blindfold perfect" parking job. They know that the test is very nerve wracking. Just make sure to follow the rules of the road, and you'll be fine. Make sure it looks as if you're aware of your surrounding (glancing around, checking mirrors before backing, etc).

I was terrified, but passed on my first try. You can do it!

-make sure you come to a full stop at stopsigns

-use your mirrors and make sure to look over your shoulder before changing lanes

-watch your speed

-if you parallel park it won't be between actual cars, it's just markings painted on the road

I hope it goes well. Relax, do what you've practiced, and do what your tester/evaluator says.

And get a good night's sleep. Tired drivers aren't much better than drunk drivers.

Good luck!

I got marked off because my eyes and head don't track together, so they couldn't tell where I was looking. But I passed.

Remember that it's a test, so you are showing that you know how to do it right. Emphasize the 'checklist' procedures a little.

Breathe. And it's OK to take a little extra time if you need it.

They want you to pass. And nobody parallel parks well. You'll do fine.

Here's the checklist of things they are looking for:

Safe Driver Checklist

Starting the Vehicle:
-Adjusts mirrors
-Fastens safety belt
-Knows where the operating controls are located

Moving Forward:
-Signals
-Looks in mirrors and over shoulder before pulling into traffic.
-Uses two hands on opposite sides of the steering wheel.

Stopping:
-Checks traffic (sees and reacts to hazards).
-Stops behind crosswalk or limit line.
-Stops without using accelerator at the same time.

Turns:
-Slows for turns.
-Begins and ends turns in the correct lane.
-Yields right of way when necessary.
-Accepts legal right of way when safe.
-Sees and reacts to hazards.

Backing:
-Checks mirrors and looks over right shoulder.

Changing Lanes:
-Signals
-Checks mirrors.
-Checks over shoulder to view blind spot.
-Changes lanes safely.
-Maintains speed.

Driving On The Freeway:
-Checks traffic flow.
-Times entry into freeway.
-Checks mirrors and over shoulder before merging into traffic.
-Signals early and slows on exit ramp.
-Adjusts speed to road conditions.

Defensive Driving Techniques:
-Checks mirrors before braking.
-Checks cross streets before passing.
-Checks signal lights and signs.
-Keeps eyes "moving".
-Keeps a "space cushion" around the car.
-Follows at a safe distance.

Today, at 3:40, I obtained my drivers license! :D I am so happy right now. It turns out that my parallel parking was the best out of the other two. :)

During my test I was afraid to go to fast (automatic failure) and I got a mark for going to slow.

Story of my life...

Yeah, I do have a car. :) A 2001 Saturn, black. My mother and grandmother are paying for insurance. So, the gas is the only thing left I have to pay for, next to repairs, if it needs any.

Congratulations. I was lucky enough to work in a place where I could teach myself how to drive at 20; I consider myself to be a decent driver. Going to driving school at 16 was nerve-wracking for me, and it didn't work; the instructor yelled at me and I cried (which is how I usually respond to stress and adversity).
