I wonder how often NTs mess up their lines in social scripts. As often as us? Less often? Almost never?

How'd ya guess?

I've been noticing lately that I have a problem. It goes something like this:

Other Person: "Hi, how are you?"
Me: "How Are you? Good." (Me saying how I am, AFTER asking how the other person is)

Does this happen to you? Is it normal around here? I feel like I am all alone on this and that people probably think I am an idiot.

:wall:

I do this quite a lot. It keeps me from feeling like a person of normal intelligence, but I know it's because I work from a kind of mental Rolodex of responses, and sometimes I just grab the wrong card when I'm in a hurry.

I usually do not mess up mine, but there was one instance where I had bought a video game and the store clerk said Veel plezier ermee and I responded Zal ik doen, which doesn't sound right. Translated to English, the two would be "Have fun with it" and "I will" (which would be a correct exchange), but if you translate it word-for-word, I should have said something else.

But otherwise, no, I tend to take good care when I'm socialising with others these days (which is usually at work).

I feel better knowing that I am not the only one who does this...but it is just so darn annoying at times when I screw up the conversation!

I do that a lot, but even worse then that I tend to answer rhetorical questions with blunt responses, talk about throwing someone off.

I do that often, but I actually put this story in another thread. I think it belongs here though.

I was at work and this one guy walked by and said "hello" and I said "good. And you?"

Stopped him in his tracks and he cracked up. Usually I'm ready to do the socials when I get to work but sometimes I'm still too tired to deal with it.

I realize now how often I do fake responses and have done this throughout my life and then I wonder why I'm not really accepted. it's pretty obvious I guess to NTs that there is no way I'm really in the same time zone as they are, so to speak.
