My husband was recently attacked by the police and increasingly so, despite me saying he was autistic, and he was resisting because he can't stand touch. They didn't believe me, and I tried to get them to at least take one hand off to take his wallet out to look at the card. They didn't. If he had a wristband on, they might have seen the ICE, as they were holding his wrists, and maybe thought "oh sh**". Instead he got knocked out on the pavement and thrown into a police cell for the night. I am looking to buy not only one for him, but one for myself also.

Any UK ppl with experience of these ICE bands, or similar?

As far as we know, he wasn't arrested.

But why were they attempting to restrain him?

Because he can't stand touch. I did explain this to them, and to prove it they needed to look in his wallet, but they didn't believe me. Nor did they believe him when he told them, before smashing his head into the pavement, rendering him unconscious.

I must point out he didn't actually do anything to warrant such brutal behaviour.. he was told to go home, and he obeyed, The police chased him and smashed him against a wall. Autistic or not, if that happened to someone else, you'd be damn sure they would resist.

They weren't restraining him because he doesn't like touch, I mean he must have been doing something to cause the police to be paying attention to him before that. For police to restrain someone like that they would have to have been caught breaking a law or causing a disturbance of some sort (or a harmless protest, sometimes).

Reminds me of the beginning of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

They broke the law, Not him. They shoved him into a wall, and he resisted against that. Then more and more of them came. Ended up in 10 police officers pinning him down on the pavement. Note that he was on his knees at one point, knocked out, and one was trying to shine light into his eyes. Submission position. They could've taken him away at that time... not 15 minutes later after binding his knees and ankles together and cuffing him.

Anyway, I didn't want to get into this, because I'm having enough flashbacks as it is; all I want to know is some information on these medical alert bands.

That's what I thought too when I read this.

Anyway, POLICE BRUTALITY.

I wouldn't bother getting one for myself, since I don't even have one for my penicillin allergy, and I've been told plenty of times that I should... but I hate those bracelets, they're so ugly.

You can get some nice looking ones now.. I just don't know if the police are trained in recognising the ICE bands. Though they were supposed to be trained in ppl with ASD's back in September and look how that turned out... *sigh*

Like LadyMacbeth said.. I googled "ice emergency bracelet" and found only nice looking ones. :3

But you know, LadyMacbeth, I don't know if they would have checked it while they were struggling with him. Most cops would probably assume it was for an allergy or something, and dismiss it as unrelated to his resistant actions until they'd already restrained him..

What kind of card does your husband carry in his wallet? Is it government-issued that the police are legally obliged to look at if requested of them?

If this is the case and the police did not listen, you should file a complaint.

If he was to wear an ICE band, would the police then know to check his wallet for the card?
