Today I was diagnosed (I think)
It was my first meeting with the specialist and after awhile he seemed to be able
to ask questions that surprised me how he would know enough to ask.
Near the end he said concluded something like you have poor eye contact and
social skills, hard wired, repetitive and restrictive interests etc. etc. so autistic
spectrum.
I was expecting hours of testing so am not really sure if this is his suspicion or
diagnosis so left my WP status as unknown. Also don't understand what hard
wired means.
Eddie
"Hard wired" most likely refers to the fact that you behave differently on very noticeable level, and so this is taken as being an underlying neurological difference, which it may or may not be.

Your first meeting, implying that there will be more? You should get paperwork, records.

You can always update that at any time.
My own experience was similar to yours (even though the initital consideration of AS/HFA was mine) when a therapist rather quickly noticed several identifying factors. He did not ultimately write down an official diagnosis, but maybe your specialist did. You might be told more about that during your next visit, and others here on WP can help you know what to consider about how much to tell other people around you.

I don't know about other countries, but in Sweden I think there's typically a battery of tests as well; scales on behavior, interview with parent, IQ-testing, cognitive profiling, testing memory and recall, story telling etc. For me the interviews took about 4 hours and the tests even more. But that was the whole neuro-psychiatric work-up. A generic psychologist might not be able to administer all those tests.
