Just wondering people's opinions on this...

If someone got overwhelmed with sensory or stress or whatever and they did things like stopped being able to think properly, went mute, went very still, couldn't process/express any emotions or stimmed quietly (some combination of this sort of thing anyway) would you call that an internally-expressed kind of a meltdown or is it just a shutdown or maybe you think both are reasonable ways to describe something like that?

Or if you think an internal meltdown does exist but not with these symptoms what would you say something like that would be like?

I say shutdown b/c when I think of a meltdown I think of a person who is so overwhelmed by trying to process everything that it makes them have physical symptoms beyond quiet stimming.

A shutdown is basically what the word says - you shutdown. I go mute too. Once I couldn't even turn my head or lean forward.

I think an internal meltdown would be trying to suppress a violent or tearful meltdown. I often suppress my feelings, which makes them much worse when I run away and release it somewhere else.
I actually have just sat in a spot while melting down in my head. I ended up with a migraine. That could be an internal one too.

That's what I do instead of having noisy meltdowns. My psychologist referred to it as perhaps being "imploding instead of exploding". I go mute, start obsessively arranging little things in patterns, sometimes don't process when people are talking to me... The strange thing is, though, it's kind of a relief. Feels like a cover's slipped, like I'm not acting any more...
