temple grandin
Me too. I got "Thinking in Pictures" for Christmas and really enjoyed it.
This thread kind of makes me sad. The idea of coming onto a support forum for people on the autistic spectrum and making a derogatory comment about a well-known, successful autistic woman is rather disturbing. I wouldn't want someone starting a thread about whatever flaws they see in me.
When I read the threads about how horrible NTs are because of the way they gossip and talk bad about people, I just think, "whatever".
Well said. I wanted to say something similar but thought I'd get too caught up in my emotions.
I don't like it when people are criticised for just being themselves.

actually, none of us are suggesting Dr. Grandin is anything less as a person as we discuss our gut feelings of her physical presentation of her autism. I read her books, I admire her intellect and her perspective. But I was glad to discuss what this internal aversion I have about her physical presentation is the SAME THING OTHERS HAVE ABOUT ME.
Because of this revelation about how it hits me in the viscera, I realize that others can not help how an observer observing me feels when my autistic presentation leads them to reject my company with seemingly no reason.

There seem to be two questions here; one specific and one implied.
I dont' know Temple Grandin and I have never met her or even seen an interview with her.
I know her ONLY from her books and complimentary comments written by her in other books.
What I have read about her in respected publications and what I have read in her books, I like.
So I don't find her annoying.
Media coverage of Autistic people does not anger me.
Poor/ill inforrmed/misinformed/biased media coverage of anything (including Austism) is unhelpful.

I find her a hypocryte more than anything. She either needs to fight the consumption of beef or quit claiming how much she loves the cows. I can relate to her in someways. I just always knew how an animal felt about a said situation and how scared they get when people manhandle them for "sport" or for medical procedures they could easily train an animal to cooraperate with but people are so damb lazy. I don't think she was obsessed with animals from birth as I was, they were a result of her "bridging" out from another obsession (pressure and squeeze chutes). I can't say I relate to her 100%, maybe about 60%.

I don't think she is a hypocrite. It has been said that Mother Theresa was a hypocrite because she didn't try to cure those she comforted as they were dying. They were dying anyway and she was there to give comfort. Those cows aren't in the wild, those cows were raised to be slaughtered, they would continue to be slaughtered in horrifying conditions if Dr. Grandin were picketing out in front of the packing house, but she has changed the way they were slaughtered to give comfort and prevent panic and fear. As she says "Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be!"
So instead of cursing the darkness, she lights a candle. Right on, Temple!

My thoughts exactly - I find the posts before this one just shocking.
And here of all places - freakin wrong.
So what, you people don't like the tone of her voice? The way she looks? Gooooood Grief. do you hear what you're saying? Aren't you demonstrating the worst of the worst behavior - the kind you don't like when it's done to you by NTs?
How about a little support?
I just saw her show on HBO and it was great. I really enjoyed every moment of it - well acted, well directed. I wanted more.

The facts (or at least some of them) as I see them are;
Dr. Temple Grandin was the FIRST person to have her experience of emerging from Classical Autism documented in a published book (which I have read)
(She may not actually have been the first person TO emerge from Classical Autism)
The idea of emerging from Classic Autism prior to this was unthinkable.
Dr. Temple Grandin is a recipient of a PhD.
Dr. Temple Grandin is considered to be THE world expert in her field.
Temple Grandin (figuratively and in my OPINION) succeeded in switching of gravity to accomplish what she has and serves as an encouragement and shining example to all who struggle in ANY way.
For these reasons she will always have a place of honor and awe in my life.

I would have loved to see the movie, but I don't have HBO. I am interested in your objections to other people talking about their gut feelings when people look at autistic people. I suppose some people feel the same way when two people of the same sex kiss. If you are used to the look, then it doesn't shock and repulse, but if you are not used to it, it might creep you out.
why can't people talk about their gut reactions? Don't we all have to work with them, becoming more enlightened and informed as to counteract the social stereotype? People before they are educated and conditioned to it not being a big deal find they have to deal with lots of stuff like that. So we can't talk about where this feeling comes from and how to work with the feelings so we can become better people?

I completely agree. She's being realistic - she seems sensible to me because she always takes into account the factors which are probably not going to change: people eat meat; cows, among other animals, are farmed for people to eat; and the main motivator for human businesses is money. If you don't support the eating of cows, you could look at it like she's making the best of a bad situation by improving things for the cows.

I agree that it's wrong to completely bash someone for something trivial like this. She is extremely accomplished and she also seems like a very kind/moral person.
On the other hand I have seen her in person at an autism convention and she does have an unintentional "brisk" demeanor in her tone and posture. Strangely, all the people who I've heard complain/comment on it were either AS or autistic themselves. I've never heard any NT's complaining about her voice. I think it's a sensitivity thing. There's nothing to stop autistic people from having sensory issues related to autistic traits in others.
