If my novel essentially falls smack bang under the sword and sorcery genre? I looked it up today and had a sinking feeling as I realised that it described my story quite well.

I think it only matters how you tell the story. There are themes that are told over and over and over . For instance I see a Cain and Abel theme in East of Eden and in Boyz in the Hood and they each stand on their own.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what would be the problem with that?

I wouldn't worry about it. No matter how unique or unusual your writing style is, there is probably something similar out there. Don't try to reinvent the wheel, just write your story how it needs to be written.

Don't despair, there's a massive market for that crap.

Just joking with the crap quip, I'm sure yours is good.

I dunno, if it's a really good one, with something unique about it. That's all right. There's only like 2 basic stories isn't there? Everything else is just jazzy window dressing.
