Possibility is that frightened mammals give off all kinds of stuff that swarm insects can pick up on.
Maybe a mamal that could be innately calm got to some of the honey/grubs in times of famine without getting stung to death? Hence manufacturing humming calms us via that route.

I was attacked by a swarm of Honey Bees when I was 17 yrs old. I had very long curly hair and a large number of them had actually gotten tangled in my hair. I definitely noticed vibrations but under the circumstance it was not calming. But I can image what they are talking about, like a mother rocking her child and humming. My children use to love that.

I never thought humming is anything wrong. I hum a lot more than I talk. Mostly it's because I love to sing. I'm a well-trained singer. I hum quietly when it's not a good time/place to sing or when I'm busy doing stuff and can't be bothered with the lyrics. I frequently wake up with some songs in my head and I end up humming it all day.

*Hey I just realized my status changed to "hummingbird" after my post saying I hum all the time. That's so funny.

I hum but do it when I'm working on something. It's a good way to sing along to a song if you don't really know the lyrics too.

I usually hum when I'm in a good mood, kinda keeps the mood going, helps me stay in a good mood. I suppose it's kinda stress relieving, I guess. I'll also do it to certain songs as well, if I don't know lyrics to them (as mentioned in the above post), or even just if I don't feel like singing the song, I'll just hum it.
