Perhaps the question's answer would only prove the question asker's point due to the logic needed to consider it valid being bad, so a misdirection via a question would seem less abrupt then simply ignoring what they said and actively forcing them to bring out the faulty logic behind their assumption instead of you?
Isn't maintaining a tone of confidence important to win an argument?
