Yes, leaving the table is just fine. Ranting that autistic children should be kept home so other people won't have to be annoyed is of course not. The other posters on that site really let her have it, though. So there's that. I like how one poster pointed out that since the family with the autistic child had a party of 7 rather than a party of 4, they were actually generating more money for the restaurant than the angry family.

There's so much confusion and ignorance about what autism is.

I was thinking the same thing myself. Her profile was public last time I looked at it (months ago) and alot of things in it seemed rather contrived to me. The dumb blond cheerleader-type impression you can glean from it seems waaaaayyyy too stereotyped to me. Whatever the case...the person responsible for this is a royal a**hat.

She sounds like a stuck up middle class American. It's horrible that there are people like that. But what annoyed me too is the guy saying 'this is HFA group, we're not like that.' I hate this division some HFA's have.
I had my share of meltdowns in public and I just have AS.

I kind of wonder myself if the boy should have been brought to the restaurant though. It didnt sound like it was much fun for him, he probably saw it as a pointless disruption of his usual routine, and it possibly weirded him out to be eating at a different time, different food, different table, not to mention noises and lighting that might not have been something he could deal with.

Who knows why the family was there. You cant have everyone shut in because of an autistic family member. Sometimes you have to get out and enjoy- what if it was someone's birthday? I bet there was a good reason . No one wants to be out at dinner and have their family member melt down in public.

You can't lock away a family member, just because they have problems, anymore. That's so 1930s. That would almost be like my mum locking me away, because I'm a masculine woman.

i remember last year when my hyperacusis was at its worst- I had heard a loud noise and it was like something in my mind sort of went haywire, and then I started hearng average sounds as incredibly loud, partcularly high frequency. At its worst I couldnt listen to a woman or a child's voice without pain.

It was my fathers birthday and i begged not to go to the restaurant with them but they came back and got me.. anyway we tried but I ended up sitting in the car for most of the night while they sat in the restaurant and ate 3 courses. I wished I had just stayed home.

So that is why I say it that parents with an autistic or aspergers child need to make allowances for the fact that they might not always be up for a restaurant meal.

The thing that bugged me is a 13 year-old screaming and pooping himself in public is not necessarily autistic. I'm sure their are a number of developmental disorders with the same type of behaviour. I think by lumping all unusual behaviour into the category of "autism", Megan has created a straw-man to base her entire opinion around. Therefore, she is a most illogical sort of troll.
