Just for kicks:

I thought for a while to come up with a username nothing like any others I use on the Web, just for Wrong Planet. Not sure why really. It just seemed like a cool idea at the time, and I think it's appropriate for here considering where it came from.

I'm curious to see how many of you know where it comes from.

And no, it's has NOTHING to do with porn!

It's not a guessing game I'm trying to start though.

I'm really just curious how many already know who the "real" MrXxx is.

(Don't give it away though! Just post something from the source, and I'll know you know.)

8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

It does! And the answer is "out there..."

Not hard to find.

I'm really wondering if anyone who actually remembers what it is, identifies with it.

Okay, so nobody cares. *SNIFFLE*

So I'm gonna tell ya enyways...

MrXxx is a character from the Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. During one early mission to Mars, after a few missions had already been sent, then never heard from again, the crew of the ship is greeted by MrXxx, who graciously greets them, and shows them around town while interviewing them. They explain they are from Earth, and had just arrived after several months by rocket ship. By the end of the chapter, the crew is put up in a facility they assume is the equivalent of a Hotel. It turns out to be an asylum, and MrXxx is the Marian equivalent to a Psychiatrist. The crew has been committed for insanity.

Too bad they never put that chapter in the movie. It was hands down the funniest chapter in the book.

Thought it was apropos to use it here.

Sound familiar. Bradbury wrote more than one episode for the original series. At least I think it was more than one.

Oddly, so did Earl Hamner, the author of Spencer's Mountain (an old Disney movie), that later morphed into The Waltons TV series. I think he only wrote one TZ though.

he [earl hamner] wrote "jesse belle" - a haunting, classic episode. but my favorite bradbury episode was "i sing the body electric." that one messed with my head.
btw, what did you think of the tv movie adaptation of "the martian chronicles"? bradbury himself was disappointed by what the american standards&practices would allow and judged the final result "BORING!" i myself could have done without the genevieve selzer sequence, which was overlong by about half.

I thought it was off of the Simpsons episode where Homer stars that rumor website and uses the name Mr. X.

Nope. The Simpsons was never my cup 'o tea really.

That's the one. Jesse Belle. I own the video of the Marian Chronicles. It was okay, but there are subtleties in Bradbury's writing that just don't translate well to film, and never will. It was a bit disappointing, but as good as one could expect for the time period. Same goes for Fahrenheit 451. Something Wicked This Way Comes was, well, "Hollywood," but better than the rest. Bradbury is better read than watched I think. For me the greatest disappointment was leaving out that mission chapter. It was freakin' hilarious in the book.

i thought the film adaptation of "something" was very atmospheric, very creepy, almost suffocating- and it conveys the poetic aspect of bradbury's writing nearly as well as the "i sing the body electric" twilight zone episode. IOW i thought it was pretty good for hollywood.

Now there's one I'm either not familiar with, or have forgotten. Tell me about "something!" :D

just my lazy shorthand for "something wicked this way comes." now please tell me, what did you think about the film adaptation of bradbury's "the illustrated man"?
