You shampoo because hair collects oil. That means it can collect petroleum oil spills too. Over 300,000 pounds of hair are cut each day in the US and not to mention all the clippings from pet groomers.

BP already ruled the use of hair out because it sinks too fast.

This has nothing to do with BP. This goes to the actual residents of the Gulf where they stuff the booms themselves at their "Boom B-Q's" parties. The coast is long and BP isn't everywhere.

I think that's a great idea.

Interestingly enough, I was getting my hair cut, and the people at the salon were saying that now it's not possible to use hair or animal fur because they were going with a commercial product that doesn't sink. The other plan was that I was going to give my dogs a bath because they're blowing their winter coats.

Despite B.P. warning on hair booms, hair collections continue



PALM BEACH GARDENS-- Friday, 05.28.10 The hair boom idea was generated by a non-profit group called Matter of Trust.

The group maintains that despite what B.P. says, the hair booms are still effective.

"Absolutely the hair is going to be used and it is being used right now," said Christine Guyard who started her own group out of her Palm Beach Gardens garage to help Matter of Trust collect hair locally.

It's called the Great Florida Weave, where she goes around local hair salons and pet groomers, collects their hair, and passes it on to Matter of Trust.

Over the weekend, B.P. and the U.S. Coast Guard said that they don't intend to use hair booms, but Matter of Trust calls it a misunderstanding saying that B.P. didn't want to pay for the collection and disposal of the booms.

Guyard says they are still effective despite what B.P. claims and that parishes in Louisiana are taking the free hair booms.

"They are deploying these hair booms now, with official Haz Mat teams putting them in cages and things created to deploy these. You just don't throw them into the sea," she said.

Last weekend Guyard delivered 300 pounds of Palm Beach County hair trimmings a Boom-B-Q gathering where volunteers made booms.

She hopes to gather another 300 this week from her network of hair salons.

At a national level, Petco pet stores are participating in this effort, too.
