working at Foxconn = less suicides

Quote:
I checked his figures. World Health Organization suicide figures for China (1999) are 13 males and 14.8 females per 100,000 people.

Elderly (65+ years) suicide rates can be as much as 50% higher than youth (18 to 24 years), which means Foxconn’s suicide rate, with its younger workforce, should be significantly below the national average.

Let’s estimate an average of 10 suicides per 100,000 at Foxconn. Just the Shenzhen Foxconn plant alone, with its 330,000 employees, would be expected to have about 33 suicides this year, or 14 so far.

Foxconn has had just 10 suicides this year, and that’s across its entire workforce.

BTW there were more suicides at France Telecom (49 vs 10)

That really astounded me - the plant has 330,000 employees who "go to work by bus" within the compund. It is bigger than the city that I live in - and the population is composed almost entirely of the peak age-group for suicide.

you are of course right but the fact is that in some of the cases the working conditions, intimidation and BRUTALITY were part of the issue. the way it is run is that often employees work between 90-100hr's per week and live on site with heavy security to keep everything hush hush.

the media coverage of the issue has of course been about sensationalism and not the truth.

Not only is the overall rate rather low, but Apple is now working with Foxconn to improve salaries for the workers and all sorts.
