Now I think its time the Scranton, Pennsylvania of Canada gets respect for this immensely progressive move conducted in 1998.

Milk was not a mayor, he was a city Supervisor, by the way.

Koch has never been open about his sexuality. Many gays of his generation would not dare; perhaps he feared he would end up like Harvey Milk.

Ironically, many people
still want Sam Adams out of office,
after two failed attempts to do so,
because he lied about a Clinton-style relationship.

Glen Murray was elected in 1998. That's 10 years before Sam Adams was elected.

I did include it in the original post (yes, even before I edited it to announce the correct answer). The reason it isn't in the thread title is due to character constraints.

No, it was Murray. Although Annise Parker was the first openly gay mayor of a US city with more than a million residents (Winnipeg being a Canadian city with just over half has many residents).

In neighboring Spokane, WA (I live in Spokane Valley) not many years ago, the Republican mayor Jim West, who had made a career of bashing gays, and denying them their rights, was discovered to have been a closet homosexual. Turns out, he was caught using a municipal computer to pick up on under aged men. The hypocritical prick was soundly voted out of office in a recall election.

That is more likely Urban Legend than not. I lived through both those tragedies, as a resident of the broader Bay Area. I really can't see why there would be any connection; doesn't add up.

Milk was never Mayor. In fact, I'm not sure San Francisco has had a gay mayor ... if it has, I'm drawing a blank. Many gay supervisors, but not the mayor.

Moscone, Feinstein, Brown, Newsome ... none were or are gay.
