When Ed Land invented the polaroid filter and marketed it who did he squeeze out?

When Craig Venter successful mapped the human genome who did he squeeze out. The U.S. government that is who. When the same man produced the first artificial life form who did he squeeze out. He and a team of 16 brilliant biologists did the deed. Who did they squeeze out?

When the Wright Brothers developed the first practical powered heavier than air flying machine who did they squeeze out. Samuel Langley? Who was financed by Congress and every one of his flying machines crashed and sank?

How much of a success is the polaroid camera today? Over ninety percent of new ideas swiftly move to the junk pile. The government is not permitted to choose a bad one? It is on record that the automobile companies purchased and destroyed the far flung street car systems that work so well and without pollution in Europe. Of course it's a mixed bag but government funding continually currently and throughout history has promoted successful experimental projects and your continual insistence in denying this reveals both a monstrous ignorance and a like prejudice against facts.

There would be no way to enforce a community of any set belief without totalitarianism. Because faith is spiritual and not scientific, people's hearts will still be bonded to their faith, even those who listen and respect the facts. Unless you are willing to take the soviet approach to eliminating religion through aggression (which would be just as immoral and insane as persecution by religious justification) there is no way to remove religion.

So, you don't enforce it. Instead, you use existing cultural power to emphasize certain beliefs, and then let the loonies keep their cults. Nobody can prevent a cult, but having a certain belief as mainstream works enough.

The better way to go about it would be to create a society where different people of different faiths can come together and form a community that does its best to make everyone happy. That's why democracy is what's cool right now.

Well, no, a better way to go about it is to create a society that can dialogue. Tolerate different beliefs, but continually emphasize that truth is more important than "what feels good". You have to recognize that religions today DON'T WANT TO be UNSCIENTIFIC. If they could tolerate that, then they wouldn't feel the need to fight to create "creation science" and "intelligent design", but they can't, and the reason they can't is because we value truth enough in our society that most people recognize that disagreeing with science is disagreeing with truth and a sign of culthood. This doesn't mean that people don't have private beliefs in ESP and ghosts, and think scientists are eggheads who can't know everything, it just means that NOBODY wants to outright conflict with it.

Frankly though, to be accurate, you aren't talking about democracy, so much as western liberalism. Puritan Massachusetts had a democracy, but Puritan Massachusetts wasn't a land of free ideas. Liberalism is the position that individuals have rights that are not to be violated by a community, and this is what allows for the dialogue.
