For me, I think adult-animated films should come back into the mainstream because I think we should eliminate that stereotype of cartoons being just for kids (some of us adults need an excuse to talk about cartoons in real-life).

I didn't think adult animated films were ever in the mainstream to begin with. It's a shame that it's socially acceptable only for kids to enjoy animation.

What are some examples of adult-animated movies?

Don't forget that various anime movies are adult oriented as well (hell, some series too . . . just check out the ones on Hulu (Course they only have MD Geist and Kite: Liberator). Also, just bear in mind that the attempts at R rated cartoons back in the 70s and 80s were horrid (as far as content, for the characters had no "depth" (Granted, Heavy Metal was more about the music, but the presentation was a bit too childlike). Now if they were more like Ghost in the Shell, they might have made it to the mainstream.

I'm an adult but I enjoy animated movies, especially some of the older ones. I own several Disney movies on DVD.

I just remembered that Rob Zombie is doing a R-rated cartoon movie, "The Strange World of El Superbeasto" i think . . . something along those lines.

Do you mean those such as Beavis And Butthead Do America?

And the stereotype of only kids enjoying cartoons is already beeing eliminated.
Sometimes the adult animation tends to go over the top compared to regular "adult" shows.

Anime has pretty much supplanted any possible and serious attempt at an English adult-oriented animation, although A Scanner Darkly and Avatar, while technically live action, were done in a way that made them mostly animation. A Scanner Darkly was rotoscoped over, and in Avatar, well, only a third of it is actual live-action, the rest being computer animation.

The Israeli film Waltz for Bashir and the Japanese film Grave of the Fireflies come to mind as excellent adult animations, both with powerful anti-war messages. The French made Persepolis, and other Japanese films such as Barefoot Gen and works by Isao Takahata and the late Satoshi Kon are other examples. The recently released American film Avatar can also be considered animation, but I wouldn't bother seeing it if you haven't already.

There's also this CGI animated film I heard about but can't remember right now.
