I can understand why they do it. But I'm not into it myself, when the world cup is on it seems like England becomes even more patriotic than America. Flags everywhere, outside windows, decorating houses, attached to cars etc. I just don't get patriotism and being proud of the place you happen to be living in.

I'm not into sports but I can understand why people enjoy it and get excited about it - if they find enjoyment out of a football game, who am I to argue? But the patriotism and national pride is ridiculous. Especially when winners are given awards.

Someone plays sport at the highest level because they enjoy it, are good at it and want to try to achieve to be the best. No one does it out of some patriotic sense of "doing it for the country", in fact which country you represent is entirely an accident of birth. Surely the winning, the adulation, and in this case a gold medal, is enough?

People relish myths. And the myth of nationhood is a pretty popular one most people subscribe too without question.

I don't get it either.
I feel fortunate to live where I do. However, I didn't play any part in achieving what makes my country a good place to live, and I don't remember particpating in any of these sporting events that I'm meant to be so proud of. Pride for anything other than one's own achievements makes no sense to me.

You're right. I like it too much, in Langley. :)

Nope. A country is a lump of rock and dirt in the ocean. I happen to be on a certain one. Why would I be proud of that?
