Always. I assumed it was because I am short in stature.
Hahaha! Yeah, I'm 5 feet tall & so kids seem to have an easier time talking to me. My mom says it's because I appear less intimidating. It took me a while to know how to interact with kids because I couldn't really read what they wanted, especially if they were non-verbal. I was only comfortable around kids once I learned more about their development.
I think me being short is a reason why animals might not be as scared of me either haha! I didn't like dogs that barked incessantly or jumped around all the time, but I was cool with the mellower ones. I also like my neighbor's rabbit b/c he's soft & fluffy. And once a squirrel on campus was nosing around me when I was hanging out outside reading a book.

The first search I did when joining this site today was "Animals" because I've had a personal theory that our minds (or maybe just mine) are somehow missing some functions of the normal human brain, and therefore we can associate better with the simpler brains of the other mammals.
That's pretty much the premise of Animals in Translation. It can get mildly technical if you're not used to academic writing, but it's still a great book!
