I've caught myself rocking to myself, a few times this week. I thought in my mind each time, "What's happening? I never do this."

"Aspies Rock" would make a funny T-shirt

Is there any reason why an NT might rock to him/herself?

I don't know, but my mom(an NT, 'cause she's got social skills) does it.

That's interesting. Maybe it is an Aspie trait that NTs can have as well.

I tend to rock by myself at my computer, or while watching TV. In public, I kind of rock back and forth on my feet, and usually sway side to side while sitting down. (I used to rock back and forth a little in my seat, but someone commented that I looked like a mental patient so I stopped). I also do this thing were I slightly twist my upper body and let my arms swing from side to side. It's funny that no one ever brings up the other things that I do, but sitting and rocking is bizarre to them.

I rock back-and-forth or side-to-side quite a bit while sitting.

I know neurotypicals can do this. I've seen it. Rocking isn't just calming for autistic people, but for most people. Hence why we have rocking chairs, and why our mothers rocked us to sleep as infants.

I never noticed I did this before but, when I'm sitting in my room alone at the computer or whatever I rock to myself. I don't do this in public. Well, actually I do rock my chair back and forth if I'm at a lunch table sometimes. But that's not a full body rock.

This is totally a stim, right? Does anyone else do this? I think I might actually stim more alone than in public.

Yup, I do this all the time. It's a very common stim.

I mostly only stim in private. I rock back and forth. I am taking a statistics course at 8:30 am this summer....and I am not a morning person. I rock in my seat during class. Other than that...up until this summer.... I've never done the "full body rock" in public.

I do it a lot, but never in public or around people. I do it especially if I'm nervous.
