Nothing new, it's One of the very few thriving professions that existed before the bible.

Rent a friend really? If someone is desperate enough to spend money on companionship why not hire a gorgeous "escort"

That seems like a joke, to me.

Looking around the website and watching how it got namechecked in the mainstream news, it looks like neither a joke nor an escort service. It actually looks like a very good idea. If I didn't already have a job, it looks like something I would enjoy doing professionally. It looks like a lot of fun. It also looks like a very helpful service whether a person already has friends or not. Look at some of the suggested activities: siightseeing, going to the park, golf, biking, etc. Neither sexual nor something that friends you already have will necessarily be interested in doing. There are so many threads where people are unhappy about doing certain things always alone, but that on the other hand it can be very difficult to navigate all the social rules necessary to maintain a long term friendship. With these guys, you don't have to. You want to go to an amusement park/restaurant/museum/convention etc. with somebody but you don't want the exhausting chore of figuring out how to persuade them to go with you? This would be perfect! I wish this had existed when I moved to a new town. It would have been nice to hire somebody who would show me where stuff was.
