The 70s animated version of TOS is better than the regular one in my opinion, and so is Star Trek: The Next Generation.

for some reason i just couldn't "get into" the "new star trek [TNG]"- it seemed cold and clinical to me whereas TOS had more warmth, more feeling. something about the digital "look" to the new series was off-putting to me. TNG to me seemed also to be devoid of humor whereas TOS had some occasional comic relief. just my 2-cents' worth, adjusted for inflation :)

Why bother with this futile battle? We all know Doctor Who is far superior to both. :P

All that aside, I do have favourite episodes from both series, though I think the best Star Trek story ever done was The Best of Both Worlds in TNG.

TNG for sure. TOS was silly. I mean Abraham Lincoln's head floating in space? Yeaaaaah. TNG just makes more sense and it's plenty funny.

The Next Generation no question. I mean sure I respect people wanting to give credit to the original for starting it all but the original series had a handful of great episodes with the left way too silly/campy/

Deep Space Nine beats both of them. ;)

Next Gen, Voyager and Enterprise are my favorites of the franchise.

I like TOS but I've only recently discovered Star Trek.

I love TOS better. TNG i really couldn't get behind. TNG does have better effects and acting, but TOS seemed more human. TNG was too pretentious. Also I love Spock. The crew in TOS was awesome. The crew in TNG wasn't that good or memorable. Data does not measure up to Spock

You might like DS9--it's less pretentious, and the character writing is top notch. :D

DS9 is very much an ensemble show...but the amazing thing is that even the recurring/guest characters in some cases get more background than any TNG regular (excepting Picard, Worf, and Data) ever got. I think you would love it. It's an investment in time because DS9 is more serial than TNG (where episodes can be watched as standalones), but it's outstanding.

I agree that Spock was a very well-written character. I realize they aren't canon, but I actually like the TOS novels much better than I did the show--I can revise the effects in my head, they tend to be less misogynistic than the show was, and the level of detail is excellent. (If you ever want recommendations, or to discuss books you've read, I'm up for it.)
