If you're willing to read things written before TNG and most of the movies (and thus are going to contradict canon), I would recommend anything written by Diane Duane. Also, I highly suggest The Final Reflection by John M. Ford. For a very recent offering that was pretty good, I'd go for Troublesome Minds by Dave Galanter. If I learned a bit more about the particular kinds of stories you like to read, I could make more specific recommendations, but those are some of the "best of the best."

Many of these books are out of print, but can easily be had at a used book store or off of eBay.

Yes, she's one of the best Trek novel writers out there.

My favorite one by her is called Dark Mirror. It's TNG-era (sorry) but deals with the "mirror universe" first encountered by Kirk's crew in TOS' "Mirror, Mirror."

If anyone reading this is into VOYAGER, try the novels written by Jeri Taylor first. Being one of the show's creators, her stuff is really top-notch. (Recommendations: Mosaic and Pathways.)

The ONLY Diane Duane novel that doesn't quite pan out is Intellivore...it's NOT bad, but I get the feeling the editors really stomped on her creativity (I get the sense they put a severe limit on her wordcount...they should've known better). It's a TNG novel too, which of course means less character material. In Dark Mirror, though, she has room to add a lot of what the show didn't, so I WILL second the recommendation for that book.

TOS just has more humanity than TNG.

All that aside, I do have favourite episodes from both series, though I think the best Star Trek story ever done was The Best of Both Worlds in TNG.

Quite so.

I do like TNG better than TOS. However, neither really compare with DS9.

While I love the crew of TOS, I prefer TNG overall.

I thought the plots were well-written, and even when it came to lame plots, it was executed ever so perfectly. And the characters flowed so well with it.

I especially loved that it wasn't a show that talked down to its audience; made it so much more enjoyable.

I was never a fan of most of the enemies on TOS, and at times it got incredibly corny...including things that would spark bar fights and things like that; just a little too over the top.

@TheDoctor82: I feel the exact opposite. while the effects were better in TNG, I like TOS better. TNG had no humanity. TOS had a lot of hilarious moments, especially from spock. TNG was too pretencious.
