What's the point of Chrome OS?

From what I've read, Chrome OS is just an OS, a media player, and a browser. Who the hell wants to be limited to those functions? I don't know about anyone else, but when I use a computer, I like to be able to write programs, make web pages, play games, use word processing, do some graphics editing, and store large repositories of porn for daily fapping. Apparently I can't do that $hit in Chrome OS; all I can do is surf the web. What exactly is Google thinking?

Honestly, 95% of people out there only do those 3 things that Chrome OS does.

Well Chrome OS is meant for netbooks I think. Minimalist Linux distros like Arch and DSL seem better though.

Face it, if 90%+ of computers run your OS, you have control over many things...not just the share of a software market your product represents.

I inherently distrust anything associated with Google. It's sad that so many are willing to cast their lot with that company.

Google is aiming for accountable statistics on their delivery of each data item. They want to monetize every transaction, for instance not just music tracks, but each time a track is listened to.

Which is what I think Google is aiming for.

They're not going to. Chrome OS is crap.

I think Google makes good products. Their search engine, Chrome browser, Gmail, Google Earth, Google Docs, etc.

The point as far as I can determine is that this OS will not take the place of your desktop OS but will suffice for low performance, low price netbooks and tablets.

I think Chrome has a lot of potential, far more then the average geek is giving it. Google is a company that spends a lot of time and money thinking about the future and evolution of technology and communication. Virtually every product that they release or acquire is based around the idea of expanding the internet. I remember hearing an interview with a guy who had written extensively about Google on NPR. He stated that internally, Google ultimately see the internet evolving into something the resembles a public utility, something that is effectively used and needed for everything, and because of this they are focusing almost all of their energy around the concept of cloud computing, because that is where the future lies (according to them and most other software giants at least). Chrome is a natural continuation of this, it is a web based OS that is designed around the cloud. It's not trying to compete with the windows-desktop modal, it's trying to take the lead in the cloud modal that is ultimately going to replace it down the road. And as another poster said, right now Chrome does 95% of what most people use their computers for just fine. The difference is that it's based around having almost all of the data stored online rather then locally.

i thought because of google, microsoft was going to put out a free version of Office out to overshadow the launch of google's word processor program, whatever that is. Where's my free software?

Chrome OS exists for one reason: to make it even easier for Google to collect personal information on you.
