I know my nearest neighbors well enough to say hello and have a brief conversation. However, my husband and I live in a very kid-oriented neighborhood; most of the people know each other because their kids all go to the same school, and play with each other. My husband and I are childfree (I told him the suburbs were for people with kids, but he insisted on a suburb; he now sees I am right), so we aren't part of the social groups that form around the children. That's all right; they are all nice, friendly people and I'm not one of those childfree people who is vehemently anti-child; in fact I like kids, and often talk to the kids as much as the adults (my dog is very popular with the neighborhood children). A couple of my friends, while not my direct neighbors, live pretty close by. I know them pretty well!
