Agreed. You are absolutely correct about that.

So the minority must conform to the majority?

Depends what are your goals. Depends on the subject

But when the subject is a multi-millennium old innocent tradition (or primal social reflex) that is unlikely to change soon, there is no fundamental reason to "fight" the trend.

I'm not interested in fighting. I just prefer not to have to worry over something that doesn't come naturally to me.

I don't wear make up, either.

On another forum someone posted a question about whether it's rude to ignore someone saying hi in passing.

I said I didn't see it as rude because the 'Hi' is an invitation for socialization and ignoring the person is a rejection of said invitation. The majority of posters said it was rude because it was 'common decency' to at least acknowledge their presence.

Am I just being rude?

Yes. It's just acknowledging the other person, not starting a conversation.

The only thing about this I don't like is when the person doesn't say hi, but says something else which confuses me so I don't know how I'm meant to respond. They think I'm ignoring them, but I'm not, I just have no idea what to say and I panic :x

Personally, I've done it for so long it's become more or less automatic. As a general rule I reciprocate any and all neutral greetings, while ignoring those that I deem as rude or to be meant to initiate conversation.

Of course, I tend to treat most non-rude greetings as neutral and go about my bussiness after the exchange.
