Not so much a disconnect as wishful thinking run amok. The liberal welfare staters think they can have all the good features of the benevolent nanny state without incurring the inevitable loss of liberty that follows the establishment of such a state.

It would be lovely to live in a kind an benevolent world in which the strong do not oppress the weak, and in which those who are suffering misfortune through no fault of their own are readily supported by their more fortunate neighbors. If I could bring such a state of the world into being by waving a wand, I would have done so a long time ago. But I am afraid we will never achieve such a benevolent state of being. I think the best we can do is to keep the evil that befalls to a manageable level.

As in apolitical? I've not met a single self-proclaimed apolitical person who didn't have some sort of opinion on some issue(s). Just because you don't vote or follow politics does not mean you don't have an opinion about what is going on.

Ignore him, he's just being difficult. He's a laissez faire free market anti-government conservative type.

I think you're wrong. Orwell noted that ruveyn has an odd mix of (right) libertarian views and authoritarian views. He's talked approvingly of the harsher elements in ancient Hebrew practices, for instance, and has hinted at a desire to use state violence to achieve political or societal goals.

Only against our enemies abroad. I think war is nifty if it is waged to kill the right people.

Actually it goes by a different name Communism. Libertarianism and socialism are practically polar opposites. If I have my definitions right than Ron Paul would be a Libertarian and he wants government out of people's lives.

With Communism you get the gulags, the "re-education camps" and the secret police.

That is the end result, you don't necessarily see it at first.

Fact is Libertarians believe that Government should get the heck out of people's lives. Where liberal socialists want government to function as a nanny state. There is a bit of a disconnect.

Broad libertarian socialist thought, proposes a world where property and resources are distributed in a localized and decentralized manner. They are not proposing a strong centralized authority like what you see in Europe.

Which is why the libertarians cannot run for dog-catcher and win.

Whenever the libertarians propose less government an few or no welfare measures some bleeding heart will stand up and cry: Oh. The Children. The Children!

Overall, I'd say that I'm more of a liberal than anything else.

I'm mostly liberal but I confess that I believe in traditional gender roles because I'm a family-oriented mamma's boy and my mother behaves like a proper conservative lady.

I'm leaning towards anarcho-capitalism. There's so many different models in the libertarian movement that I'm constantly updating my political and economic alignment. I do think that we should slowly head towards anarcho-capitalism by first introducing a gradually decreasing minarchist state. There's no clear cut option in your poll for anarcho-capitalism, by the way. It falls under libertarianism, so I chose that. There would still be the existence of private property, but not in the sense that we have now. It would be a contractual society. Believe it or not, with the ability to set up any type on voluntary institution, anarcho-communism could exist within this society. It is a voluntary society where people have the liberty to do what they wanted; whether that was to set up a business or a commune.

Nothing on that list really covers it all, because my ideologies are basically a mixture of several different poll options. In the end, I opted for Conservative. But, equally as important to me is my fairly radical liberalism (in the classical liberal tradition, but with the belief that a welfare state is necessary). I'm also national conservative and very anti-EU in outlook.

When I was younger and explored politics through a more utopian ideological lens, I flirted about with libertarianism and other such things. I've always found fringe politics fascinating and still do. Getting older, however, I've been shifting my political mindset to my practical reality instead of ideology. The few people important to me in my life are mainly poor and have mental disabilities, myself included. We aren't Galtean ubermensch and need government services now and then. I don't want to live in a dog eat dog society in which the most ruthless flourish and others eat dirt. Now socially liberal with taxes going to general infrastructure that benefits everyone, health and mental health care, along with safety nets for the needy. No, not very unique or exciting.
