I've recently been re-kindling my interest in the very great outdoors, watching through several astronomy DVD sets I've picked up (history channel's 'Universe', Mysteries of the Solar System and Cosmos) - On the PC I've been playing with Universe Sandbox which is great fun and have just discovered Orbiter. Do people have any other software or DVD recommendations for learning about and exploring astronomy?

I use Stellarium if I want to know the names of the stars and planets I'm looking at in the night sky.

Or Celestia if I want to take a tour in the universe.

They are both great free applications.

I've been trying to grab celestia but the website keeps timing out on me, I had a portable version of that a while ago but it performed so badly on my old laptop that I forgot about it. I'll keep trying.

In the mean time I also found and installed World Wide Telescope which with its guided tours looks like it's going to keep me busy for a while! I'll check out Stellarium too, thanks.

You are welcome.
You can try downloading Celestia from sourceforge.

I didn't try the portable version, but the regular version works fine with me.
Enjoy. :D

I haven't checked in a while, but the software we'd always suggest to people when I worked in a planetarium is Red Shift.
