This one stands out even in the face of all my academic achievement in the face of depression and disability.
My mother used to work in a group home for disabled adults. I was about 14 at the time, and during my school holiday's I'd go to work with her, because I enjoyed talking to the people who lived in the home.
The person in charge of the home (not my mother) was called the house mother.
One day, we all went out for a barbeque and to play cricket. There were a few extra people visiting, and one was a man named Stuart who could talk but hardly ever did. I had spent the day doing what I thought was nothing; just playing cricket and talking to the people from the home like I'd talk to anyone else, as I treat everyone the same.
In the middle of it all, this guy Stuart, who virtually never talked, came out with "Rachel should be the house mother."
