Facebook looks to trademark the word 'face'

The social networking giant Facebook is a few steps away from trademarking the word face, online documents reveal.

The site has been asked to detail a "statement of use" by the US Patent and Trademark Office, explaining how it intends to use the word.

If granted, the trademark will only apply to online sites and services used to exchange messages.

It could limit the use of the word in other social networks and services, such as Apple's Facetime, lawyers said.

Trade mark specialist Fiona McBride, from law firm Withers and Rogers, said the move was "not as unexpected as it may sound ".

"Facebook is right to lay legal claim to use of the word 'face' in the context of social networking sites and other specific computer-linked activities because they have built up a reputation in the name Facebook, of which arguably 'face' is the dominant element," she said.

The social network's ambitions were first reported by technology blog TechCrunch.

It highlighted a document that showed the social network had applied for the trademark for use in "telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users".

Facebook is currently the largest social network, with nearly 600million users.

Facebook declined to comment on the story.

It's a slap in the face. I don't know how the lawyers who came up with this have the nerve to show their face. And lets face it - these faceless bureaucrats never face up to these accusations and come face to face with the problems they cause.

how absurd.

has apple trademarked the lowercase letter i???

planet facebook.

soon nothing that generates any cashflow will be owned by anything / one other than mark zuckerberg, clear channel and exxonmobil and if we want an independent existence we will have to leave the earth, but flights outside of the earths atmosphere are going to be for commercial profit also so the capitalist bubble will always be bigger than the earth.

I am sure the courts will put the kibosh on any attempt to patent the common term "face".

This attempt to so copyright is nothing but a blatant attempt to collect rent on property not properly owned.

Stop right there, criminal scum! You're under arrest for copyright infringement! You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and has been used against you in a court of law. Your fate has been decided. You are hereby sentenced to death by multi-million dollar lawsuit.
