I've read in some places that having Aspergers is like being a foreigner who doesnt know the social customs, mannerisms of a certain place. I think thats true for me. I feel very disconnected from the place and culture where I grew up. Where Im from: there is more of a distinctive culture then other places. People feel the need to distinguish themselves constantly from the other 49 states within the US. Overall; I feel like I just dont fit the laidback vibe. For the past few years, ive been away in college(out of state), Ive grown so much in finally picking up social mannerisms for the first time in my life. Coming back home: I feel very different, Im just a foreigner in the place I grew up even more so then before. For a long time Ive wanted to find myself a place where I can find "home". I havent found that yet. Where I grew up is just not "home" especially not in the way that so many people there consider it "home". I was wondering if theres other people that feel like foreigners in the place they were raised.

Yeah, people used to actually say to me; "You're not from round here, are you?" It's amusing because I've lived here most of my life.

A little bit. But I guess my way of thinking collides on some parts with the enviroment I live in. Some parts it doesn't since common sense has still some value in the country I live in.

I guess since the way of thinking is similar for most people with autism, it's easy to collide with people who don't understand or are like you in ways of thinking.

In the words of Tom Waits:
"The World is not my home, i'm just a passin' thru."
source

Although totally out of context, it sums up my feelings toward local, regional, national and global temperaments.

I do think you can find a home with people who you trust or give trust. Mutual acceptance goes a long way in a homely feeling.

You being away for awhile and got 'acclimatized' to the place where you studied, maybe needs a while to adjust.
Social mannerisms can differ alot between places, in one place a closed posture might be alot more appreciated instead of the place you where before.
Mannerism = ettiquette = place dependend.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

I also get people presuming that I'm not from my area. I've ordered tea on a ferry one time, and the lady said, "I can tell you're from London." What was it about me that screamed London? I took it as z compliment. :)

That was fun - when I got to London to finish my degree, for the first time people saw me as an American. Not that big a deal, you do not get big points for being American, but so refreshing not to be seen as a Brit, or Spanish, or whatever.

It has made me pretty much immune to culture shock except when I am at home.

Well, I speak Polish fluently, so it's obvious that people think I'm Polish - and they're right. Most people think I'm from Silesia, because of my accent, but Silesia is a part of Poland too. I'm from Pomerania.

I really feel like a foreigner, like a stranger or like an alien. I'm different and it doesn't matter where I am, because my brain is different. I will never be one of the people, a part of the team. We can do something together, but it's always They and Valoy.

I'm not even from this planet, this Universe.
In my Universe we communicate through drawings and music.
Our clothing becomes our skin.
Our planet is so beautiful and full of detail that we see no need to look at people when we talk to them.
We are so intelligent that our words get mixed up and muddled when we try to speak.
Our uniforms are so stiff that non-verbal communication is almost impossible.

The "place and culture" of my childhood no longer even exists, but I had never really fit within it anyway ... and I have since been like a foreigner just about everywhere.

Lol, I get that all the time too! I think it's because I can actually pronounce 'th' rather than 'f', etc and am not a member of the trackie-army.

Lo! I am a Stranger in s Strange Land. That is what Moses said when he came to Midian.

Abraham said to his Hittite neighbors, I am a dweller and a sojourner among you. Which means I am here WITH you but I am not OF you.
