Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was outstanding, a film I could appreciate on every level from acting to script writing to atmosphere to historical fiction. I never read the books, but I understand the crew put a huge amount of work and money into recreating the look and feel of an 1800s British galleon. It deserves a sequel, but is still a complete picture by itself. I enjoyed every minute.
A Series of Unfortunate Events gets honorable mention. It was creative and interesting enough to survive Jim Carrey in the title role, which is no small feat. It also introduced me to Emily Browning, an interesting actress once upon a time--but going by what she's appeared in since then, she may have one of the worst agents in Hollywood.
