i am wondering, do you need a voip server to be able to use a half dozen IP phones in a LAN (no outside connection, for internal comms only)?

am thinking specifically of a cisco 7940 ip telephone. do i just plug a half dozen of these into my LAN and expect them to work, or do i need some sort of dedicated VOIP server and dedicated LAN just for the ip telephones?

You don't necessarily need a server, however, you will need to route the calls.

You need to flash the Cisco to SIP firmware first using an TFTP server. It's a big PITA. I have the files, PM me if you need them.
And the Cisco 7940/7960s are awesome phones, but their real power of them isn't fully realized until you have them on a Cisco CallManager SCCP system. The newer 7900s have gigabit Ethernet and color, yes color screens but they use a new configuration file and firmware format - Cisco decided to switch over to XML for the phone parameter files.
