I am sorry that some people do not respect your knowledge and opinions. This is their loss and not your loss.

I am a special education teacher. Every so often I run across a "professional" who is a pretentious ass. That professional might insist that a certain method of teaching or behavior modification is a generally accepted best practice in education. As a result, I research the subject to better understand what the person is trying to explain to me. Thus, I will read about the topic, contact other experts, or try to track down a specialist. At the end of my quest for accurate information, I tell myself, "If the so called expert just kept his/her mouth shut, I would be much better off."

Still, experts have the right to be wrong. My family doctor makes mistakes all the time when treating my medical problems. As long as he tries his best, I am happy. In the end, he always finds a solution to my medical problem.

I respect learning and the acquisition of knowledge. People with advanced degrees usually posses a fair amount of both; therefore, I generally respect the scholarly set. HOWEVER, simply having a degree does not automatically grant one the right to demand my obedience, either physically or intellectually.

I'm a skeptic first and foremost. Any opinion I'm presented with will automatically get subjected to analysis and further research when warranted depending on the nature of the subject matter. To do otherwise is to adopt the mindless mental habits of a pack animal.

I'm reminded of the experiment where normal people delivered dangerous "electrical shocks" to their friends for no other reason than a guy in a white coat told them it was "okay." I respect Ph.Ds.........but not enough to let them rent free space in my brain.
