The actual making of them I would find relaxing and fun, as I had always enjoyed making things as a child but I don't really have a use for "tizzy" things. Do I just give them away to people I know, or sell on ebay?
You can make things that build a collection - I make papertoys (
http://www.vinylpulse.com/paper_toys/ ) just for the fun of it, and the most interesting recent ones are on a little shelf. If it was whittling wood (see Flexcut
http://www.flexcut.com/ ) then you could make things that last well - perhaps even chess sets, or the characters from books, bowls or carved boxes.
I also make jam and pickle - it fulfils some primitive need to see a whole shelf stocked with tasty things, which also make good gifts.
