I GET SO FIXATED IN THEM UNTIL I WERE THEM INTO THE GROUND, SUMMER I FIXATE ON CICADAS AND CATFISH, WINTER IS MUSIC AND UFO RESERCH. HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE THIS THAT ARE DIAGNOSED? If you are not screaming could you please edit your post and take out the caps lock?
It's very hard to read and well it's forum etiquette.

I have about 12 special interests. Some are sub-categories from one or two other ones and some are minor special interests.

These are:

Physics > Quantum physics > Future physics > Astronomy

Photography > Concert photography > documentarian style

Creative >Drawing > B/W Sketching > Painting > Writing sci-fi and fiction

Sci- fi > Doctor Who > Stargate

Neuroscience and other medical things > Autism > ADHD > Epilepsy

Music > Funeral For a Friend > Brand New > Motion City Soundtrack > Thursday > Cursive > ETC

Video games > on phone or Nintendo Wii or PC.

Harry Potter

Forensics

OK, that was more than 12.

I could probably spend time on 3-5 on them in a day. There's always just one I have an intense interest in. I think now it's Doctor Who which in turn gets me into more sci-fi, which gets me into future physics and also Astronomy.
Oh and I listen to music and play videogames whenever I can.

I have had several obsessions, special intrests, fixations, whatever you want to call them over the years but from what I have observed, they always revolve around a theme. My main special intrest was always one species of animal or another. Meerkats are my main special intrest and Lion King has always been for years. You are probably wondering and yes, my meerkat obsession was a bi product of my Lion King obsession. My special intrests were always animal and zoology related.

Over the years, it's been marine life, pro wrestling, societies, human behavior, psychology, comedy, older music, science and it's methods, chess, tennis, and other sports, history, numbers, patterns, and problem solving. There are probably some others as well, like cooking and spices.

It changes for me too. I can go from one to another rapidly. Usually only have one or two at a time. More than that would be chaotic as hell, wouldn't it? But yeah I just get very interested in a fixation, study it, make it an expertise. What is so mentally disordered about that??

However I do recognize that the fixations can become problematic--like the one I had with skin care (and the removal of pimples). I ended up trying so many "home remedies" that my face was red and peeling, several times. This was about 5 years ago.

Ones I've had - 1977 punk scene/music, drugs (a big fixation to this day, and not just using them--studying them extensively, reading all about them, for hours and hours)--heroin, meth, cocaine, lsd, hallucinogens of all types (dmt, shrooms, all forms of psychotropic plants), even pharmaceuticals, & pot as well, psychiatry (studying DSM, and the like), psychology, existentialism, school shootings (Eric and Dylan were particularly a fascination for a short period), different music bands, different movies (writing fan fic, obsessively finding out all about them, reading scripts, etc etc), the list drags on......

I have multiple fixations. The major ones have been the same for about a year and are still going strong, while the secondary ones have a tendency to change around a lot.

Major obsessions: Four of Tim Burton/Johnny Depp's movies (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhands)

Secondary obsessions (at the moment): Terry Pratchett's Hogfather (movie version), Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (movie version), and the whole Steampunk genre of fiction, fashion and music

I have different kinds of fixations/special interests. Like there's the 'one hit wonder' kind where I become fixated on something for a while, then lose interest and never have more than a passing interest in it again. And there's the 'rotating' kind where I always have some interest in it, but every so often it comes to the forefront and I become completely obsessed for a time.

Sometimes I can be obsessed for a year, sometimes it only lasts a couple of days.

I do find I can really only focus so completely on one thing at once and feel an almost manic need to pursue it when I am* and almost annoyed with anyone who distracts me from it.

* I've wasted a lot of money that way in the past.

My primary interest has always been, is and will probably alway be TO READ
My secondary interest is what I read about, and that changes from time to time. Mostly there is only one subject at the time. Some of the subjects are very small like Moomin trolls (the books only) and others can be jery big like Japan (food, etiquete, history, music)

I have maybe three or four main ones and bounce between them.
I'll spend days working intensely on an organ piece and then switch into electronics mode and pick up something I'd worked on earlier - then switch into programming and do some stuff with that. Mix all this in with reading too. It's intense, but pretty chaotic.
My main issue is that I rarely complete one thing in one go. It gets completed "by installments" as I bounce around all the other interests.

(and please DON'T SHOUT - it's very difficult and uncomfortable to read)

i waffle between my fixation with computers, art (i like make pictures/3d model with my computer and real models), video games (the story's in them that is), there are others but they are to numerous short lived/insignificant to bother mentioning.

Science: Kindergarten to present- Even as a 5 year old, I would read nothing but science books

Birds: 6th grade to present- I described this already in another thread, but to recap, I memorized the bird books, put up bird feeders, made assignments into stuff about birds or at least drew them on my homework, went into the ornithology field, etc...

Pokemon: 12th grade through 2nd year of College- This used to eat up all my spare time. I used to play the game, watch the anime and collect the cards.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Last year of college to present- Play the games, write fanfiction, wrote several guides to the games, used to make sprite comics, etc... I am listening to Sonic music right now, more specifically Un-gravitify, Electro mix

Mental Health/Asperger's: 2007-present- I became interested in this when I found out about Asperger's, but soon afterward had a mental breakdown and my dx has been changing ever since. As a kid, I was ADHD and Emotionally Impaired with severe symptoms, so I guess it's the same thing manifesting itself different ways???

There's also the 'mutating' obsession where I might start off being fixated on one particular thing, but go on to become obsessed in everything related to it. Like I might be obsessed with a movie set in the 1920s and become obsessed with everything about the 1920s.
