An aquaintance with AS is planning to move to Aussie because she claims the support there is better than here.

So, what is the difference in support between Australia and New Zealand?

You mean Autism NZ?

The bi monthly tea and bikkies get together not enough?

You could demand choc biscuits...

I asked if they did lobotomies and was put on a list

Autism services only seem to exist in Queensland or further north.
I've heard a lot about parents struggling to get their kids with HFA in schools. Even LFA at times.

I'm on job support because of my autism. I'm one of the lucky ones.

Can't really compare the two because I don't know what's like in NZ.

Autism NZ is fine, I just wondered how Australia compared.

I also realised part of the "support" issue is government support, like welfare and disability services, how do those compare?

Surfman, do you go to the AutismNZ groups? Because I do...

I enjoy the groups. Will be going less when my course starts. Anxiety provoking when crowded but I'm making friends.

My name's Roland.

Hi Roland, I remember you.

What support does you friend wish for? What exactly is it that they feel is lacking in NZ?

I'm still trying to understand that, I think part of it was to do with the amount cut off the benefit while working, sounds like they're not so cut-throat in Oz.

Don't see how she could simply cross the ditch then hop onto welfare though, even if she takes a job at the same time. Didn't they change the laws to restrict that?

Anyway, off to bed. Will check back tomorrow.

It is kind of cut-throat over here. You have to be making under a certain amount to get pension payments. You have to reapply every two years.
Disability is really hard to get on. Usually people with mental illness/ disorder get on it but people that have physical pain struggle to get on it.

Does she live alone or in a group situation with "flat mates" ?

She's living with family at the moment, was living by herself but was too expensive to save money.

The difference in self-support between Australia and New Zealand is this:
* Australia: The Autistic Self Advocacy Network Australia: http://www.asan-au.org/
* New Zealand: Autism Spectrum Kiwis: http://www.asknz.net/
