Or rather, my (just 16 year old) brother is. He's been in a mental hospital for the past couple of months (for suicide attempts) and he's just been arrested for possession of child pornography. The police came to our (the family) home and took all the computers (the shared computer, with my iTunes, my father's computer, which is own by the company which he works for, a very old laptop of mine, which I never use and more (but nonetheless contains private things), and my macbook, which I use for the music I make, for storing the photographs I take and for the things which I write).

I don't know how to cope any more. My music is how I cope with life. Everything has gotten gradually worse and worse for him, me and my family, but at the same time things have been getting better for me as an artist, with exhibitions featuring my work becoming more frequent.

But I don't know how I will be able to keep on working (on my art). I am hanging in limbo, I have no idea what the future hold for him and the rest of us. I have no idea how to cope.

Hey, don't really know what to say apart from I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Keep going with your creative pursuits though as however they change with the circumstances, they will probably help you through. If you want to vent via pm, feel free.

I hope things get better.

oh my god, I'm sorry. :(

I don;t know the legalities of things either...... i do understand your need to stay sane through things by working it out creatively....... hopefully you can do things accoustically for now, or borrow a computer (i know there will be software issues. :( )

please hang in there and let us know how you're coping.

Well I am not sure how things will turn out, but if there is nothing illegal on your Mac Book they will return it to you at some point. What sucks is they tend to take their time with things like that so depending on how long the investigation takes would probably determine how long you will have to be without it. Something simular happened with people I know and they got their stuff back within a couple months.

Whoa! So sorry about that. I'm sure the police will return it if they don't find anything.

Maybe borrow another computer or something...

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I have never been in a situation as difficult as the one you describe, but I have found as a coping mechanism to just try to get through today, without thinking about what might come or worrying about how I will cope for the next months and years, or even next week. For right now, you just have to get through today. Best wishes to you.

Dear Giftorcurse,
I just don't know what to say about your post. I AM SUFFERING and what could your post do but make me feel a whole lot worse. Everyday is harder, with life with my father becoming harder and harder, and the stress of the terrible problems my brother has and not having the comfort of my computer. I hope is life is not down the drain, though. He is only 16 and has been in a mental hospital for some time. They think it may be some sort of personality disorder or something. I hope that that means something to the court. Or I'm even more ffked than I am now, feels of Death becoming evermore prevalent, swinging on the pendulum/noose, when will my neck break/when will I drop off?

You're going to get through this. Just keep moving forward.

As much as your love your brother and worry for him, you have to understand that the consequences of his actions are his. I'm not sure what the court will make of his mental illness. It is a serious offense.

I don't think anyone should speculate on your brother's future......negativity is not what you're here for. You need to focus on how to get yourself through this.

Have you found a way to work on your music without your mac?

I have an old four track tape machine, I suppose I'll have to start using that again. I'd just finished recording a song seconds before I found out about the whole thing. I managed to save the song (forces smile).

See, even that is a tiny ray of light. And hey, maybe you could use this time to experiment with new mediums.

I'm sorry you and your family have to suffer because of your brother's choices.

Sorry to hear that. I hope your brother gets the help he needs, and that you get your computers back as soon as possible.

I dont know about your countrys laws but in Canada, the courts do factor in mental illness. As far as your comp getting siezed you can probably apply to the court to get an order to have it returned. It is your bro who stands accused and not you. If he had no access to your comp you can swear an Affidavit stating such.
