Hi all :D

My apologies if this question has been asked over and over again to the more senior members of WP. I am relatively new here and very new to the spectrum (well, to my awareness of it) so I am super interested to hear what you all think.

I have recently been seeing a psychiatrist (therapist? one-on-one neurology tutor?) and she tells me I need a 'PR department.' I am not a corporation, but I know what she's saying. I have terrible human relations, mostly because I understand my strange neurology and find myself describing it before I know what I am trying to describe, but find am not able to adequately describe myself in a way that is humorous and light-hearted to family and co-workers (or friends, though my anxiety around friends has gotten to the point where I do not contact them anymore). I'll end up saying things like 'my brain is not working today' or 'I'm having tunnel vision,' which helps people go easy on me but does little to facilitate actual understanding.

So, to sort of get to the point here, I am wondering how you all find yourself describing yourself / explaining your quirks to other people regularly, either in a short, concise and funny way or in a more serious, I-am-not-like-Rainman way. Any light you can shed on this issue would be most warming and welcomed!

I just tell people that I'm spaced out. I find that most people don't want to know more.

I just tell people that I'm a quirky guy with a good vocabulary and a bad attitude with a strong propensity towards drinking root beer (or something along those lines)

If I'm feeling more relaxed, I tell them that I'm bits and pieces of every person I've ever met.

I'm the tall weird girl with the seizures who tells the stupid jokes.

I'm 60s Mod who's set in her own ways. My favourite band is The Kinks and I'm a tomboy who's very Mick Avory-like.

I tell people that I'm socially awkward and that they shouldn't be offended if I don't always talk to them because I go through periods of time where I don't feel like socializing. I also mention that I'm typically a very sweet person, but that I am also quick to anger and prone to mood swings.

I'm stuck in the 70s-80s.

No matter how I tried, I cannot get it right
(being a growedup), I have flopped every time.

So I stick to what I know.
Being 7 and playing with my Legos
and my electronics.

I don't date, dance, or go to pubs,
its just not my thing.

I like my electronics, legos, and crayons
and playing outside in the rain, its more
fun, no law against it.

I built a 12 to 9 volt regulator circuit
so I can power all my 9 volt things
about the house, my alarm clock, my
weather radio, my other clock, instead
of having them eat up 9 volt batteries,
I run the 9 volt lines from the 12 volt to
9 volt converter. A 12 volt battery is being
maintainance charged by a low current
AC adaptor, then from there is connected
the 9 volt convertor, 3 lines come from
this 9 volt output and go to the 9 volt
appliances, if the power fails and the
charger goes off, the 12 volt battery
will power the 9 volt backup things from
a fresh charge, whereas a 9 volt battery
could fail at any time.

Depends who I'm talking to and how my aspie traits are manifesting. Often, I don't have any problems, or I can self cope with no need to communicate. Usually it's better to find ways to avoid having to have a discussion. I think it's better not to invoke a label, but to describe tangible problems, how they affect you, and what the other person can do to help or accomodate. As long as it's a reasonable request and you ask and explain politely, things usually turn out okay.

Come to think of it, it's a shame that I use negative terminology, apologise for it or make-light :?

I explain myself as a bit odd, being strange, or 'I'm being a little <insert random noise here>' - I make a lot of noises; blah, meh, gah, arg being negative used in these situations. Or I let my arrogance take over and just ignore anything negative or strange about me/my traits that others may be picking-up on...'I'm just being a little blah...but I'm still awesome'.

I'm a bespectacled dwarf that looks like a 12 year old boy with mad hair and a rock and roll style of dressing, that is obsessed with Doctor Who and science.

I find I'm pretty good at describing myself to other people.

I tell people when my brain isn't working that I'm having 'brain fog' or 'feeling inattentive.' I just give people the symptom names.

I think I don't describe myself. People describe me, but not in my presence...

I've always just avoided it myself. But I'm trying to figure out how to do the latter right now, because this place I've been contracting with keeps asking me to do things that I'm not comfortable with. (Not questionable things, just things that normal people have no problem doing, but I do.) But when I go over it in my head, there are just so many elements to it: difficulty with speech processing, inability to multi-task, sensory issues, inability to find my own way out of a paper bag... It would be easier if I could just tell them it's an ASD, except they still wouldn't understand.
