McAlavera, thanks for the rebuttal and explanation. I can see your point but I still think that he's more likely Aspergers, in light of his age and experience. I'm still not convinced that a person with Aspergers can't learn to socialize functionally.

Funny you should say you'd rather be schizoid than HFA. Does the fact that one has more treatment and behavioral choices than the other make for that preference?

For me, it's the desire to socially function naturally within this society ... at least when needed. I can do that by being a schizoid but I can't do that by being an Aspie/HFA. The most I can do is fake the things that NTs naturally do.

I see from where you're coming and I couldn't agree more.

MCalavera - check this URL out (they discuss the similarities between Aspergers and Schizoid):

http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/content/43/19/20.2.full

Maybe it is possible that HFA and Schizoid Personality Disorder (lightest form of schizophrenia), lie in the middle between, intersection of, the two spectrums (autistic and schizophrenic spectrums). I'm beginning to see that I may fit right into that place, for various reasons.

Thanks for the link, sir.

I can see what you mean. There are a lot of striking similarities (even if they are both not professionally identified as identical).

You're welcome Droog!!

I hope the OP sees that URL, I think he sounds like he's at that nexus as well. Frankly, I found the convergence point of the two spectrums to be a place I'm more comfortable with seeing myself. I clearly have an ASD, that is especially obvious when I think back over my childhood. As I aged I believe the difficulties associated with ASD (bullying, social difficulties, physical abuse, etc.) may have caused me to develop Schizoid Personality Disorder, as a means to cope. The development of that disorder was then arguably furthered by my choice of self medication, good ole' merry-wanna. :P

Hmm, this kind of ties in with what I was saying in theSymptom or Core? thread. Many of the symptoms of autism could be caused by other issues, like social anxiety, and the lack of empathy/ability to read body language, could just be because if you don't grow up socializing normally, you just don't pick up those things and you learn to get by on your own. That can look narcissistic when you no longer consider other people.

OCD can be stimming, just something physical to calm yourself (lots of reasons a person might want to calm themself). But the schizoid part seems a whole 'nother step where the OCD behavior is irrational, based on fantasy and confusing reality with imagination like thinking there is really a need to clean one's hands repeatedly. That's not the same as rocking or spinning to calm yourself.

The part about not enjoying intimacy in the schizoid definition is puzzling and sounds out-dated to me. For one, I don't see any dissociation from reality there, just a desire to protect oneself from painful rejection by avoiding getting too close. It must be supposed that the lack of pleasure is a subconscious thing, and the person really wants intimacy but must dissociate in order to survive? Well, that could be the case for autism too, or it could be just common sense; too many failed attempts at intimacy and after a while it really is not wise to attempt; it's just not worth bothering; it's too stressful.

I suppose the difference is with autism, the difficulty doesn't necessarily arise directly from abuse, but from hyper-sensitivity to sensory input. It does also appear that schizophrenia is genetic and by my reckoning, arises from hyper-sensitivity to one's intuitive senses; more awareness of one's imagination where autism is more about hypersensitivity to physical stimulus, but also some tendency toward rational thought in some way. I can't really pin it all down but these are the associations this discussion brings to mind.
