When mothers lose their sons to bullets from foreign soldier's rifles, righteous indignation fuels further and further violence. One need look no farther than Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine for examples.

We are petrified about threats to petroleum stability. But perhaps--just perhaps, the billions of dollars that would be spent daily to secure these supplies might be better spent in two other ways: 1) getting new supply from the proven reserves in Canada, Russia and the United States, and 2) getting price stability in the marketplace.
We weathered the embargo in '73. We are far less reliant in North America on middle east petroleum than we were 38 years ago. So let the Chinese go wandering in to this one if they're so worried. Perhaps it's time that they shouldered some peacekeeping burden, anyway.
