These movies have absolutely nothing to do with each other whatsoever except for the title starting with the same word.

Star Trek is a good attempt at "hard" science fiction.

Star Wars is a camp fantasy cartoon to amuse children.

What wombat said except I don't see what the significance is of attempt, unless you are talking about TOS. Which is totally all about tripping on acid and seeing Abraham Lincoln and furry racist rodents.

Especially with the Trade Guilder's sounding like Charlie Chan. The first three were fine in the day, but Star Trek has always been better Science Fiction.

That happens in Star Trek VI. And there is an early ST:TNG episode that shows a guys head explode among other gory things.

Star Trek wins because they have Lt. Cmdr. Data.

Also, the characters have a lot more depth to them, whereas in Star Wars it seems rather contrived to me, any attempt at having characters with any realism to them. Star Wars did have Princess Leah, but she is more interesting due to the attractiveness of the actress playing her rather than any attempted realism as a character developed by writers for the actress to emulate. Star Trek is not physically realistic in the least, but as a soap opera set in space it excelled at having actors who played realistic characters (especially starting in the third season, perhaps I should add as a caveat) and who did their work well. There may be the aspect that Star Wars is a set of movies and Star Trek was a set of television series, however in reference to Star Trek I am only referring to Star Trek the Next Generation. The relatively small amount of time which Star Wars consists of could have been more thoroughly developed and better for it, but it only seemed to become more contrived even within the initial trilogy sequence. However this happened to the series of Star Trek as well, as the best of it were seasons 3 through 7 of the Next Generation, but as it went further along, into DS9, VOY, and then the abominable Enterprise, it also became contrived to the point of looking to be of the same quality of cinema as the "prequel" movies of Star Wars.

I'm not saying that Star Trek is better than Star Wars. I love both equally. If somebody asked which was the best I would say that I couldn't choose. But I will say I probaly know more about Trek than I do about Wars, which is kinda funny(not haha funny) because I've liked Wars alot longer than Trek. I first got into Star Wars in 2002 when Attack of the Clones came out and ITV show the first four movies to which I watched and even taped. Star Trek is only something I just got into when the J.J. Abrams movie came out. I saw the trailer with that epic music when I went to see X-Men Origins Wolverine and thought I give it a go and to prepare myself I watched a few classic episodes of the original series on the Sci Fi channel and despite all the corny stuff I thought it was really enjoyable and kept on watching. I even tunned into Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise on Virgin 1 and enjoyed those ones as well. Deep Space Nine came on later for me. I saw the movie and loved it and as time went on I kept wathing the shows on T.V. and eventually started buying the DVDs and I even purchased the box set of the first 6 movies and loved them, well 4 of them at least and around the time J.J Abrams film came out on DVD I purchased the box set of the Next Generation movies. To this day I have all 3 seasons of TOS, all 7 seasons of TNG, all 7 seasons of DS9, all 7 seasons of VOY, all 4 seasons of ENT(which I have to admit is not as bad as people say), the animated series(which now that I think of it it probably wasn't that good) and of course all 11 movies.

You got to admit the best trek episodes are when the federation people flip out and do stuff thats very un-Picard'ish.

like, Archer stealing and pirating other ships and Sisko sucker-punching Q (priceless!).

Uhhh, no. You need to read more before you try to define Star Trek as Hard SF. I suggest Heinlen, Asimov, Clarke, Reynolds, Baxter, Lem, and Bear.

Star Wars isn't hard at all, but at least it doesn't have colorful jumpsuits, Warp speed, and god pistols. Hyperspace/lightspeed isn't technically FTL travel, it's wormhole travel.

Don't knock Star Trek. :) I love it (except DS9 and Enterprise) and have never really jumped onto the Star Wars bandwagon. Plus, Reginald Barclay is very Aspie-like, another reason why I love Star Trek. :)

Star Trek is Science Fiction whereas Star Wars was intended to be a Space Opera. Both have their merits. And, both are subject to the limitations of TV/Movie releases. The Original Star Trek TV series got a face lift in the blue ray release. Awesome.

Implying Space Opera isn't Science Fiction
The Star Wars movies are intended to be specifically Space Opera yes, but throughout the EU and television shows, they've expanded to encompass more genres. I've seen cyberpunk, cautionary, first contact, and military sci-fi to name a few. Star Trek has just as much bs as Star Wars. Like the TOS episode in which crossing through a barrier along the Milky Way's edge causes a couple of characters to turn into god beings with crazy shiny eyes and greying hair. And the aliens aren't really varied. Even if it's unlikely for aliens to be so numerous and to sometimes resemble creatures found on other planets, at least the aliens all look different from each other. In Star Trek, it's the opposite story. We're told that many planets were seeded by some ancient race, thus why many sapients look very similar. Both shows portray space combat unrealistically. Both involve supernatural powers at times(Star Wars doesn't always revolve around Jedi and supernatural elements and neither does Star Trek.)

I like both DS9 and Ent. (actually DS9 is my all-time favourite TV show but each to their own.) Odo I think is also very aspie like especially in his attention to detail and his frustration about certain "humanoid" traits.

The long "vs" list kind of hurt-ed my eyes but here's my own list of fave to not-fave movies from both franchises:

1. First Contact
2. Wrath of KHAAAAAANNNNNNNN!! !! !! !!
3. JJ Trek 2009.
4. The Voyage Home (it's funny)
5. New Hope
6. Star Trek VI.
7. Attack of the Clones
8. Insurrection (please forgive me)
9. Return of the Jedi
10. Generations
11. Star Trek V: That thing with God
12. Nemesis (again forgive me)
13. The Empire Strikes Back
14. Search for Spock
15. Phantom Menace
16. Revenge of the Sith.

Not mentioned: Star Trek TMP (haven't seen it yet.)
