Self-diagnosed. I was a kid in the 1980's and AS didn't exist as a diagnosis then.

Just knowing that "it" has a name has been immensely helpful. :)

Now unofficially (but professionally) diagnosed. I'm not looking for any type of accommodations or services, so an "on paper" diagnosis isn't really necessary...knowing there's a name for why I feel so different is what really helps.

Plus, part of me kind of likes being this way...I wouldn't be who I am now if I thought in a different way.

It is very difficult in the UK to get an adult diagnosis and even if you eo there is no support afterwards in many areas.

Also there is no way I could walk into the doctors and say 'hello, I think I have aspergers'!

I want someone to just notice and tell me which I know won't happen.

I know I need to fix certain aspects of me to fit into society the way I would like to and I was working on that before I heard of aspergers.

Self-diagnosed.

My shrink won't even consider Asperger's no matter how often I bring it up. He might not be able to keep me on the hook for bipolar medicine that never works.

Self-diagnosed, looking forward to get unofficially diagnosed. That is fairly enough, as others mentioned before. Knowing what I am is an immense help.

I don't know what to answer. My neuro said that I didn't look like an aspie, that I had probably a mild one, but I wrote him a 11 page email stating my impairement and quickly referenced me to a well known team specialist in Quebec. So is this some kind of unofficial diagnosis?!?! I don't know

It sounds like your neuro doesn't know what to answer, either. However, a referral could be called an "unofficial diagnosis"--maybe.

Well, he's a psychologist, and I believe here psychologist can't make a diagnosis. Also I talked to him about my cannabis consumption, he told me that only a psychiatrist would be able to help me on that matter!! ! I'll see him tomorrow, he's my teacher in a optional class (Learning better and more efficiently). It's a class he started 3 years ago to help student in the ETS (École de Technologie Supérieur, technical engineering university)... He helped a lot of student to find out they have ADHD or different learning problems. It's the first time I see him after that email, so maybe he will help me better!

I really do not understand this logic. Why say "yes I have it I don't need a medical professional to tell me that"? If you think you need to have this diagnosis, but not receive help for it, surely there was something bothering you enough to seek an explanation to your behavior, why then, would you not receive a positive confirmation of your suspected autistic spectrum disorder, and get some further help?

No, and before anyone gets their knickers in a knot, I am NOT belittling anyone, or saying either way is right or wrong, but I honestly just want to know why.

The thing is, I don't need to get a diagnosis. I do not see how getting one is of any benefit. I did not even know I had aspergers until three weeks ago, and it hasn't caused any serious problems for me so far. I never would have considered myself as needing help.

And why would I get a diagnosis if I do not need one? I've researched all over the internet, it is extremely obvious to me that not only do I indeed have it, but most trained psychologists have a hard time diagnosing it. I'm not going to go around jumping hoops and wasting truckloads of money looking for someone to tell me "yea... you probably have it", when I already know that I do.

I actually did this to my GP ,I was a nervous wreck before I said it.and the fact that the doctor had not even heard of AS was not very helpful.I said''hello. where can I be referred to be diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome'' and he said this ''a what? :o :? '' and I said ''an autism spectrum disorder called Aspergers syndrome'' and he said ''I would not know much about it ***looks at papers*** but I know you are currently seeing a psychiatrist(I see a psychiatrist because I had a suicidal emotional breakdown 1 and a half years ago) and they would be able to help you out more''...and I said ''okay'' and he told me ''make sure to do that now'' I said ''i will''...but you see the prob is I had just met a new psychiatrist the previous week and I did not know him at all. It took me months to say it to the GP and I knew him for years.

that was a couple of months back now but I have not seen the psychiatrist since then and if I make an appointment then I would be forced into opening up about aspergers syndrome which terrifies me.

I have also seen a occupational therapist who (altough I have not mentioned AS or anything related) gave me a self test about sensory processing which I scored high in many areas and also set me up for a social skills group which i went to first but we did not learn anything about social skills only things I already know and some stupid excercise about which tree charactor are you... 8O
here is the sheet...I am in two areas ha ha

I'll be 69 next month... a diagnosis wouldn't do anything for me. I have little faith or ... respect for most psychiatrists and psychologists in the U.S. They are mostly drug pushers and enablers.

Of course there was no Asperger's when I was a kid, a teen, a young man, a man in his prime... or a middle-aged man.

I found my way to Asperger's after taking a battery of exams on the www... and reading. And then reading here has shown me clearly Im on the spectrum. But I won't mention it to anyone I know again (the one I mentioned it to scoffed).

Before I ever ran into Asperger's I was wondering though why there were never any people in my photographs... http://f0rtylegz.deviantart.com/gallery/ ...
