Now of course it would probably be too much effort for those wanting to play a video game to do all of the actual rigmarole of assignments, however it could be a game of choices and consequences. Such as, you want to actually learn something so you go through your reading assignments and learn the material, but consequently you are now late for submitting the written assignments by which you are graded. You put a lot of effort into your submittable assignments only to have them graded poorly, but when you just randomly throw things together they get a good grade. Have it so that if you somehow offend a teacher that they seek any possible means of marking you down. Have a frequent reminder in the form of phone calls and email to make sure your financial aid is in order. Have it so that the school automatically tries to make sure you are taking the maximum number of credit hours each quarter/semester. Have the occasional propaganda arrive to remind you about how important and wonderful college is just in case your experience might lead you to believe otherwise... etcetera, have it work like college in the real world....

Oh bleh, of course the credits within the game would be meaningless. But heck, credits in real life only indicate how much money you were willing to have channeled through oneself and not really an indication of knowledge acquired.
