I've wanted to ask this question for a while now.

If I could, I'd sleep during the day and stay awake at night... but as it is, I have a very erratic sleep-wake cycle.

What is it like for you?

(A note about the poll: Since a lot of Aspies sleep less than most, I decided to ask about when the middle of your sleep cycle was, rather than the beginning. So if you went to bed at midnight and woke at 5, the middle of your cycle would be at 2:30 a.m.)

I was nocturnal 25 years ago. I was also chronically depressed. Now I'm up every day at sunrise, but I do cat-nap when I can.

Mm, yes, depression could figure into it. Sleep disturbances are a main symptom.

I also prefer to sleep during the day and get up late afternoon and be awake at night. At the moment though, my sleep patterns are fairly erratic as I do early and late shift patterns at work. When I'm on lates I will stay up sometimes till about 3am. On earlies, I have to be in bed by about 10-11pm otherwise there is no getting me out of bed.

I have to work during the day and I am expected to be availible at the office by 8a. this is not natural for me I feel better if I can sleep in till 11a or so and not sleep till 1 or 2a.
If I could work during these hours I would be a much better employee I know this and so does my boss however there is just no adjusting our ,clients want to call early so any changes can be made durning that day before they leave for the day.

I'm fairly nocturnal, and am usually up pretty late. I think much more clearly at night, for some reason.

I got up at 4 PM on monday. My sleeping pattern all ways shifts forward. Its like
I'm on a longer than 24 hour cycle. No question I prefer to be awake at night. The
only time my pattern was normal was when I worked for several years I got up
at 7 am. But on weekends I over slept.

Had a headache trying to figure out my median ;)

Normally [i.e. not after days of sleep deprivation], the earliest I can sleep is around 11pm.

From time to time, I get weird sleeping patterns where the most sleep I can get is about 6 hours.

I would usually prefer to be up at night and sleep during the day, but I think it may be only because there are fewer people around at night and I crave time alone. Plus night is so quiet; I can think better and get more done.

Same here. During the years I lived on disability, I generally went to sleep about two hours later every time.
Only my pattern has never been what is considered normal. I would say it was "unpredictable" when I was in kindergarten and school, and during the past year that I've been going to work. So apparently it was because I couldn't follow my natural sleep-wake-cycle.

BTW, some guy told me that according to a study, many people don't have a 24-hour cycle.

I'd rather stay up at night too. I guess it's mostly due to sensory sensitivities (light, noise, heat, even smells). But let's face it, most people are awake during the day, so sometimes I'd like to be normal and sleep through the night.

Left to myself i'd stay up until 2/3 and then sleep in until 11 or so. But i can't do that these days. I also seem to need a lot of sleep and i prefer to have naps about 3/4 in the afternoon. I get really tired if i'm woken up during the night.

I LOVE staying up late, when everyone else has gone to bed and the downstairs is all mine. Its a lovely feeling. But i've learnt to love getting up early too, so many more hours in the day.
