immigration is necessary for a country to grow, OECD countries are experiencing low birth rates and labor shortages that require immigrants to solve these issues. Not really a political issue except right wingers want more Swedes and less Africans.

So do scientists but hey...lets stick to politics

I often hear right wingers complain about freedom of speech but they seem equally wanting to quash the media and left wing voices these days under the accusation of fake news.

Where did you dream this one up?

Right wingers tolerate autism if you can pay for yourself, If you i) don't have money and ii) have high needs they don't like you so much.

^Good points all, but you do realize the OP posted this about nine years ago and is extremely unlikely to still be here and reading this?

My home is my castle, and as such I am within my rights to defend it with overwhelming force without fear of legal repercussions.

In fact OP is on the banned list and that's from long before I (or many other current users) knew about WP or joined here.

^Thanks for the explanation, Wolfram. I'd say one's loved ones/family, pets etc who need to be protected/defended count as well as the physical property.

Saying conservatives hate gypsies is not racist because conservatives are not a race.

I don't know where I am on the left-right spectrum. Probably nowhere because I can't understand political jargon because I didn't finish high school and am therefore dumb.

You'd be amazed how many truly dumb people manage to stumble through higher education, and how many truly intelligent people don't.

Yes, don't fearmonger against entire ethnicities.

Are you scared of Traveller/Romani babies?

If not, the trouble is the behaviour, not the ethnicity.

I'm scared of anyone who does a lot of the negative things stereotyped with Traveller/Romani culture, esp Traveller culture. A pair of settled guys deciding to have a bareknuckle boxing match would scare me more than a Traveller child.

The trouble is that the negative stereotypes reinforce themselves when people of a certain ethnicity aren't given a chance to prove they're better than the stereotypes.

Wolfram is right. Education isn't an accurate indicator of smartness or intelligence. Some of the smartest folk in history didn't fit in at school.

@KT67: Indeed. No group should be singled out or discriminated against. Even in this age I'm amazed how many people apparently still feel somehow threatened by Roma culture.

Conservatives hate anyone who's not WASP unless they're not WASP themselves in which case they hate everyone who's not their culture, or maybe WASP

Obviously not all conservatives.

But fear of the outsider is a conservative position.

Then I'm not conservative despite being primed to be by my folks as well as the "powers that were" at the time I was in my formative growing-up years.

Me no? but my parents used to travel through Europe regularly and were told in nearly every European country they visited to watch out for gypsy pick pockets if they were travelling alone. I think the only time they were robbed on a train was (ironically) in the UK and involved a gang where one person blocked my parents from getting onto a train and a second accomplice came behind and cut the straps of the handbag with a pocket knife. The police never told my parents the identity of the gangs but in future travels they were wary of risks.

I was posing a question rather than sharing values

In the modern world success is gauged by $$ not a piece of paper that hangs on your wall.

A lot of passionate American professors who are really passionate about teaching and research in areas they love often live in their cars as their employer don't value them enough to pay enough to keep them living slightly above the poverty line. The teachers/researchers in higher ed who succeed are not the sharing/caring type, they specialise in what attracts funding not what they are passionate in - corporatisation has made higher education into professional training colleges.

Meanwhile their students don't engage with their learning because higher education is a stepping stone to $$. They are more worried about which Ivy league university they get to show off about rather than whether they will become better human beings (caveat - this is more an observation over 40 years so don't ask me for data).

So I would reframe your comment to be "You'd be amazed how many truly selfish self-centred people who aren't really passionate about teaching or learning end up as teachers or students in higher ed"
