Saw this article on Dr. Cannell's twitter sight, thought it interesting, so thought to post.

Is this some kind of joke? I figured out that I would have been conceived in May, so it wouldn't apply to me.

How does that theory explain the rapid and extreme rise in ASD cases?
Suddenly lots of people getting jiggy in winter? People used to only mate in summer?
I don't buy it.

I was born in July, so that theory is not applicable to me.

Better diagnosis would explain the rise.

Study based on 7 million of the California population. The max difference between months is 16% incidence, so some effect but not great. Other smaller studies have shown mixed results. May be diet / environment related which will still be location specific.

I'll be more impressed if the same results turn up for a southern hemisphere winter.

Development and delivery topic

A child born in March was probably conceived during warm months, even if somewhat premature. I was born full term in late October, so I was conceived in early February, and the sample was taken from a US state in which much of the climate is more temperate year round anyway. :?

Conception is not birth, so it is unclear to me to which event they are referring.

My father, very likely to be autistic, was born in late May, and full term, so that he was likely conceived sometime in September. Hardly wintry in the Northern Hemisphere.

Too broad a concept. I still think there is a strong genetic component.

apparently cold sperm and frozen eggs cause autism because they are shivering they are having trouble communcating which effects the fetus's communication skills. (sarcasm)

My mistake. I got "conception" and "birth" confused.

I was conceived in October, so that theory still is not applicable to me.

I was in fact born on May first. Other than making me a damn commie, I would think the date wouldn't have anything to do with my Asperger's.

May Day, which is May 1st, has traditionally been celebrated by communists and socialists as something of a revolutionary Labor Day.
No wonder I'm politically so far to the left. :D
